AMD's Next-Gen Ryzen 9 "Strix Point" APU: A Glimpse into the Future with Zen 5 Architecture

Early Benchmarks Reveal Promising Performance Despite Prototype Stage

In a fascinating development for tech enthusiasts and industry analysts, a Geekbench entry has recently unveiled an early engineering sample of AMD's Ryzen 9 "Strix Point" APU, showcasing the power of the upcoming Zen 5 architecture. The sample, bearing the OPN ID "100-000000994-14_N," confirms AMD's ongoing advancements in processing technology, particularly for mobile platforms.

Zen 5 Architecture: Bringing Power to Mobility

The Ryzen 9 "Strix Point" APU features 12 cores and 24 threads, making it the fastest configuration observed for Strix Point (1) SKUs thus far. Although the chip operates at a base clock of 2.00 GHz in the logs, the actual peak reached was only 1.4 GHz, indicative of its early engineering status. This suggests significant potential for higher clock speeds in the final product, possibly reaching or exceeding 5 GHz.

This prototype APU integrates both Zen 5 and Zen 5C cores, as suggested by the total 24 MB of L3 cache and 12 MB of L2 cache across the board. With an L1 data cache increased by 50% compared to the Zen 4, the Strix Point APU is positioned to offer substantial improvements in both single-threaded and multi-threaded applications.

Benchmarks and Performance Insights

The Ryzen 9 "Strix Point" APU has already demonstrated impressive capabilities in preliminary benchmarks. Despite its lower clock speed, it achieved a score of 1217 in single-core tests and an impressive 8016 in multi-core tests on Geekbench. A subsequent test at the same 2.0 GHz clock speed showed even better performance, further solidifying its potential to reshape expectations for mobile computing performance.

Comparatively, the current AMD Ryzen 9 8845HS with 8 Zen 4 cores typically scores around 12,000 points at 5.2 GHz. This early glimpse into the Ryzen 9 "Strix Point" suggests that the 12-core Zen 5 configuration could dramatically elevate performance, setting a new standard for multi-threaded efficiency.

Future Prospects and Industry Impact

AMD's Strix Point APUs are slated for release later this year, starting with the mobility-focused Strix Point (1), followed by more robust chiplet-based variants for both CPU and GPU. This rollout could potentially coincide with major industry events like Computex 2024, where AMD may reveal further details and expanded lineups.

This sneak peek into the Ryzen 9 "Strix Point" APU underscores AMD's commitment to pushing the boundaries of processing technology, particularly in the mobile sector. With advanced cores, substantial cache improvements, and the promise of higher clock speeds, the upcoming Zen 5 APUs are poised to offer significant advancements in power efficiency and processing capability.
