Everyone's First Social Media Friend Is Still Around. Tom Anderson, also known as "Tom from Myspace," was one of the pioneers of social media, launching Myspace back in 2003, well before the days of Facebook and Twitter. As one of the first platforms of its kind, Myspace quickly became a cultural phenomenon, reaching its peak as the seventh most visited website globally in 2005. Despite its success, Anderson sold Myspace to News Corporation for $580 million. He remained as president for a few years but retired in 2009 following a shift in ownership. This retirement coincided with Facebook's rise to dominance, marking a turning point for Myspace. Eventually, News Corporation sold Myspace at a significant loss for just $35 million in 2011.
