20 Million Pirated Tyson Fury Boxing Match

A Costly Victory: How Illegal Streams Affected Revenue

In a historic bout, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. However, this monumental event was overshadowed by a staggering loss in revenue due to illegal streaming. An analysis by online intelligence company Yield Sec for Mail Sport revealed that over 20 million people watched the fight through unauthorized streams, leading to an estimated £95 million in lost revenue for rights holders.

The Scale of Illegal Streaming

Yield Sec's investigation uncovered over 2000 different illegal streaming locations broadcasting the fight from Riyadh. A significant portion of these viewers, about 18%, were from the UK, highlighting the widespread nature of this issue. Sky Sports, TNT Sport, and DAZN, which had secured the broadcast rights for the fight, saw millions of boxing fans circumvent the £25 pay-per-view fee, opting instead for illegal streams.

Regional Breakdown of Illegal Viewership

The analysis showed that Europe had the highest percentage of illegal viewers at 45%, followed by North America at 25%, and Asia at 16%. In the UK alone, almost four million people watched the fight illegally. These figures underscore the global reach and impact of piracy on major sporting events.

Financial and Security Risks

Illegal streams often come with hidden costs beyond lost revenue. Many of these streams are funded by advertisements for gambling or crypto schemes, and some even charge a small fee, averaging less than £1. Despite the low cost, these streams pose significant risks. DAZN's spokesperson emphasized that sports piracy is theft and warned against the potential dangers, including phishing and identity theft. They highlighted that illegal feeds are often provided by criminal networks, further increasing the risk for viewers.

Comparison with Previous Events

The illegal viewership for the Usyk vs. Fury fight was among the highest ever recorded, with 36 times more people watching illegally compared to the Anthony Joshua vs. Ngannou heavyweight clash in March. This dramatic increase in illegal streaming highlights a growing problem within the sports industry.

The Fight Against Piracy

Broadcasters like DAZN are investing heavily in combating sports piracy. They employ advanced technology to monitor user activity and educate fans about the risks associated with illegal streams. Despite these efforts, the challenge remains significant. The vast number of illegal viewers for the Usyk vs. Fury fight demonstrates the need for continuous innovation and stronger measures to protect revenue and maintain the integrity of sports broadcasting.

The illegal streaming of Oleksandr Usyk's victory over Tyson Fury serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the sports broadcasting industry. While fans seek affordable ways to watch major events, the impact on revenue and the associated risks of illegal streams cannot be overlooked. It is crucial for rights holders and broadcasters to continue their efforts in combating piracy and safeguarding the future of sports entertainment.
