AEW: Over Five Years In, Still Struggling to Turn a Profit

AEW's Financial Struggles Despite Growth and Expansion

All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has firmly established itself as the second-largest professional wrestling promotion in the world, trailing only WWE. Since its inception over five years ago, AEW has garnered a dedicated fan base and expanded its influence in the wrestling industry. However, despite its growing popularity and various revenue streams, AEW has yet to achieve profitability. This financial reality, discussed openly by AEW president Tony Khan and wrestling analysts like Dave Meltzer, has sparked considerable debate and speculation about the company’s future.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted AEW's financial trajectory. The ban on live audiences at events cut off a crucial revenue source, leaving the company reliant on other income streams such as merchandise, pay-per-view buys, and television deals. While AEW managed to stay afloat thanks to a timely second television contract, the loss of live event revenue during the pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of its business model.

Television Deals: A Lifeline and a Challenge

AEW's television deals have played a critical role in its survival and growth. Initially, the company's first TV deal only covered production costs. However, this contract was renegotiated after three months to a paying deal, providing a much-needed financial boost. This renegotiation was pivotal, especially as the pandemic soon after made traditional revenue streams scarce.

Despite these deals, AEW has faced criticism and skepticism. Critics argue that the company’s viewership numbers are not impressive enough to justify its expenses, labeling Tony Khan a "money mark" — a term used for individuals who invest heavily in wrestling without seeing financial returns. Such criticism overlooks the broader context of cable television ratings, where AEW's numbers are relatively strong.

The Video Game Setback

One of AEW's significant revenue-generating initiatives was the release of its video game, "AEW Fight Forever." There were high hopes that the game would help the company achieve profitability in 2023. Unfortunately, the game received mixed reviews and underperformed in sales, dashing hopes of a profitable year. This setback has delayed AEW’s financial turnaround, despite other successful ventures and increasing viewership.

Current Financial Outlook

As of now, AEW has not indicated that 2024 will be the year it turns a profit. Despite securing a third television deal and granting Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) exclusivity on all AEW television content, financial stability remains elusive. The exclusive deal, which eliminated AEW’s streaming shows, aimed to streamline the company’s content delivery and maximize revenue from television rights. However, these efforts have not yet translated into overall profitability.

The Future of AEW

The road to profitability for AEW remains uncertain. The company continues to innovate and expand its offerings, striving to enhance its appeal and financial performance. However, the challenges it faces highlight the complexities of sustaining a professional wrestling promotion in today’s media landscape. AEW's journey underscores the importance of diverse revenue streams and strategic financial management in the sports entertainment industry.

While AEW has made significant strides in the wrestling world, its financial struggles continue to pose challenges. The company’s resilience and adaptability, showcased through strategic television deals and new ventures like video games, reflect its commitment to long-term success. However, achieving profitability remains a key hurdle that AEW must overcome to secure its future as a leading wrestling promotion.
