Dive into Iconic Pop Culture with Airbnb's Latest Offering: Themed Stays Including the X-Men Mansion
Airbnb has taken a bold leap into the realm of pop culture by introducing its 'Icons' program, which transforms iconic locations from both real and fictional worlds into unique lodging experiences. This initiative is highlighted by the transformation of a mansion in Westchester County, New York, into the X-Men Mansion from the Marvel Animation series X-Men ’97. This move is part of Airbnb's strategy to expand its offerings beyond traditional accommodations and into immersive experiences that tap into the cultural zeitgeist.
The mansion, which sits majestically atop a hill with a breathtaking view of the rolling hills north of New York City, now features a replica of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. What makes this mansion stand out, aside from its grandeur, is the presence of a giant, battered Sentinel head right in the driveway, setting the tone for an authentic X-Men adventure. The interior of the house has been artistically modified to mirror the two-dimensional aesthetic of the animated series, complete with thematic rooms like Professor X’s office, Beast’s lab, and the adrenaline-pumping ‘danger room.’
Airbnb's CEO, Brian Chesky, explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that while Airbnb is a household name, the company aims to broaden its identity and connection with customers by offering more than just a place to stay. “Icons,” Chesky elaborates, is a means to infuse a sense of wonder and excitement into Airbnb’s offerings, linking them with significant cultural symbols and stories.
The idea behind "Icons" germinated from a whimsical thought during a shopping trip to Ikea about a decade ago, which evolved from a viral one-off event to a fully-fledged product category on Airbnb. Following successful stints with the Barbie Dreamhouse and the house from Home Alone, Airbnb decided to institutionalize this concept into a regular feature. These iconic stays not only cater to nostalgia but are designed with an extraordinary attention to detail, which Chesky attributes to the inspirational ethos of Walt Disney himself.
The X-Men mansion experience is crafted to be deeply immersive; it includes a multi-hour tour with actors portraying various X-Men characters. Guests can engage in unique activities like cocktail crafting in Beast's lab or combat training in the danger room. Each bedroom reflects the persona of different X-Men characters, such as Wolverine, with subtle yet distinct thematic touches like claw marks on the alarm clock.
Further enhancing the "Icons" lineup, Airbnb plans to include other notable properties such as Carl’s house from the Pixar film Up, which will be brought to life and suspended in the air, and the Control Room from Inside Out, aligning with the film’s upcoming sequel.
This initiative represents a strategic shift for Airbnb, from being a platform offering places to stay to becoming a creator of unique, memorable experiences. Chesky expresses his excitement about the program, emphasizing that it allows guests to access worlds and experiences that are typically beyond reach, from fictional realms brought to life to intimate celebrity encounters.
Airbnb's "Icons" will launch with 11 locations, promising an ongoing expansion with new additions throughout the year. Most of these experiences will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with some carrying a modest fee, making them accessible to a broad audience.
