NFL says they didn’t consider Taylor Swift in Chiefs-Bills scheduling, contrary to conspiracy theories
The 2023 NFL season brought an unusual crossover of pop culture and sports, with music superstar Taylor Swift's relationship with Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce capturing significant media attention. As Swift appeared at several Chiefs’ games, speculation grew about how much her presence influenced the NFL’s decisions, particularly in the 2024 schedule release.
NFL Denies Taylor Swift Influence on Scheduling
In the lead-up to the 2024 NFL schedule release, rumors swirled about Swift's influence on the scheduling, especially regarding a mid-season Chiefs game against the Buffalo Bills. These rumors reached a peak with a claim on The Dan Patrick Show that Swift’s Toronto concert dates affected the Chiefs’ game in Buffalo. However, this theory was debunked by the NFL.
Charlotte Caray, the NFL director of broadcasting, discussed the issue on FanDuel TV’s Up and Adams, clarifying that her comments about considering Swift's tour dates were limited to her performances in NFL stadiums, not cities like Toronto that don't host NFL games.
Official Statements from NFL Executives
During an NFL conference call about the schedule release, Hans Schroeder, executive vice president of media distribution, and Michael North, vice president of broadcast planning, addressed these conspiracy theories. Ben Volin of The Boston Globe asked if Swift’s fall schedule was a factor in the NFL schedule-making process. North confirmed that Swift's performances in NFL stadiums were considered but dismissed any influence from her Toronto dates on the Chiefs-Bills game.
“We certainly considered the tour dates that hit NFL stadiums,” North stated. “I think she’s in Miami, and maybe New Orleans, Indy, we certainly considered those. But one thing we didn’t consider, I saw a lot of conspiracy theorists talking about Kansas City at Buffalo middle of the season when Taylor’s playing Toronto, that one definitely did not hit our radar screen.”
Focus on the Kansas City Chiefs
North emphasized that the Chiefs were a central focus in the scheduling process, a result of their status as defending Super Bowl champions rather than Swift's involvement. Some of the Chiefs’ games were manually assigned rather than being part of the automated scheduling process, reflecting the team’s high value.
“As far as doling out the Chiefs’ games go, they’re a Cowboys-level asset right now,” North said. “Being able to pull two Kansas City games kind of out of the mix, put them in a TBD black box holding spot for the Saturday-Wednesday round robin at the end, we wanted to make sure we still felt like we could deliver quality Kansas City inventory.”
Media Distribution of Chiefs Games
The NFL ensured that multiple networks received prime Kansas City games. NBC secured three Chiefs games, ESPN received a couple, and CBS got eight Kansas City games. Additionally, Amazon secured a Chiefs game for Black Friday, a strategic move to build out their presence in the NFL broadcasting landscape.
The Chiefs' prominence in the NFL schedule is a combination of their championship status and the additional media buzz from Swift-Kelce's relationship. However, the NFL's senior schedule makers clearly stated that Swift’s Toronto dates did not influence the Buffalo game, contrary to some media speculation. The NFL's approach to scheduling emphasizes the team's performance and marketability rather than external pop culture factors.
