OpenAI Pauses Use of ChatGPT Voice Amid Scarlett Johansson Comparisons

Concerns over AI voice resemblance to Scarlett Johansson prompt OpenAI to halt usage and review processes.

OpenAI, the generative artificial intelligence startup, recently found itself in the spotlight after releasing a demo of its new ChatGPT 4.0 model, which featured an emotive "Voice Mode." One of the voices, named "Sky," garnered significant attention for its striking similarity to Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of an AI in the 2013 film Her. This unexpected resemblance has led OpenAI to temporarily pause the use of Sky's voice amid public concerns and scrutiny.

The Issue at Hand

Last week, OpenAI unveiled an extensive demo showcasing the capabilities of ChatGPT 4.0's Voice Mode. Among the available voices, Sky's emotive and engaging tone quickly reminded many viewers of Scarlett Johansson's character in Her. The resemblance was strong enough that OpenAI founder Sam Altman even referenced the film in a social media post during the demo.

Users and observers raised questions about the selection process for the voices, particularly Sky's, which sounded suspiciously like a well-known celebrity. OpenAI responded swiftly to these concerns, announcing a pause in the use of Sky's voice to address the issues raised by the community.

OpenAI's Response

In a blog post, OpenAI addressed the controversy by detailing the process behind selecting and creating the voices for ChatGPT. The company emphasized that it did not intentionally mimic Scarlett Johansson's distinctive voice. Instead, Sky's voice belongs to a different professional actress using her natural speaking voice. For privacy reasons, OpenAI did not disclose the identities of the voice actors involved.

OpenAI explained that the casting process began in early 2023, involving collaboration with renowned casting directors and producers to identify suitable voice talents. Over 400 submissions were received, which were then narrowed down to 14 finalists. These finalists were interviewed extensively to ensure they understood the vision, capabilities, limitations, and risks associated with human-AI voice interactions. Ultimately, five voices, including Sky, were selected and recorded in San Francisco before being integrated into the product.

Commitment to Ethical AI Development

OpenAI has reiterated its commitment to supporting the creative community and ensuring ethical practices in AI development. The company worked closely with the voice acting industry, providing compensation above top-of-market rates for the actors whose voices are used in ChatGPT. This collaboration aimed to ensure transparency and fairness, respecting the rights and contributions of the voice actors involved.

Moving forward, OpenAI plans to introduce new voices to the ChatGPT platform while maintaining rigorous standards for ethical AI development. The company is dedicated to addressing the concerns raised by the community and will continue to refine its processes to avoid similar issues in the future.

The controversy surrounding Sky's voice in ChatGPT highlights the complexities and ethical considerations involved in developing AI technologies that interact with humans. OpenAI's swift response and commitment to transparency demonstrate its dedication to addressing these challenges responsibly. As AI continues to evolve, companies like OpenAI must navigate the fine line between innovation and ethical practices, ensuring that technology benefits society while respecting individual rights and identities.
