Submarine Fault Delays “Mission: Impossible 8” To $400 Million Budget

A Major Setback for the Blockbuster Franchise

The production of Christopher McQuarrie's highly anticipated "Mission: Impossible 8" has hit yet another snag. Following the disruptions caused by industry strikes, the film now faces delays due to an unexpected technical issue involving a $25 million submarine.

Submarine Malfunction

The Daily Mail reports that a crucial piece of equipment used in filming, the gimbal that lowers the submarine into the water, malfunctioned under the vessel’s weight. This unforeseen issue necessitates extensive repairs, expected to take several weeks. The gimbal's failure is particularly problematic as it delays the completion of scenes vital to the movie's plot.

Rising Costs and Budget Concerns

World of Reel has indicated that the film's budget is approaching $400 million, although this figure remains unconfirmed. If accurate, this budget escalation is alarming, especially considering Paramount’s significant financial loss from the seventh installment of the series. Last summer, "Mission: Impossible 7" underperformed at the box office, reportedly costing the studio nearly $100 million.

Production Woes

Before the strikes halted production, McQuarrie had managed to shoot approximately 40% of the film, including major set pieces in Africa and the Arctic. Much of the remaining production is taking place in the UK at Longcross Studios. However, the movie's most ambitious action sequence is still pending, adding to the mounting pressure on the production team.

Star-Studded Cast

Despite these setbacks, the film boasts an impressive cast. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, joined by franchise regulars Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. The cast also includes Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Their involvement adds to the high expectations surrounding the film’s release.

Release Date Uncertainty

Currently slated for release in May 2025, the ongoing delays could potentially push back this date. Fans are eagerly awaiting what is rumored to be the final chapter in the "Mission: Impossible" saga, and every delay only heightens the anticipation.

Looking Ahead

While the submarine malfunction is a significant hurdle, the resilience of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise suggests that the production team will overcome this challenge. With Tom Cruise at the helm, known for his dedication and willingness to perform daring stunts, there’s hope that the film will deliver the high-octane action and thrilling narrative that fans expect.
