Tesla Owner's Near-Collision With Train Sparks Debate Over Full Self-Driving Technology

A Tesla driver's terrifying experience raises questions about the reliability and safety of Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology.

A viral video has sparked widespread concern and debate after capturing a Tesla vehicle nearly crashing into a moving train. The incident, which occurred on May 8, 2024, involved Craig Doty II, a certified general appraiser from Ohio. Doty's Tesla, operating in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode, failed to detect an approaching train, leading to a chaotic and dangerous near-miss.

Details of the Crash

Doty was driving at around 60 mph in foggy conditions when his Tesla sped towards a railroad crossing. Despite the flashing red lights and visible train, the car did not slow down. The dashcam footage shows the car veering suddenly to the right, crashing into a railroad crossing arm and skidding off the road. Doty managed to regain control by slamming on the brakes and steering manually, but not before significant damage was inflicted on the vehicle's front right side.

Driver Accountability and Technological Shortcomings

Although Doty took responsibility for the incident, he criticized Tesla's FSD technology, expressing frustration that the system failed to recognize the obvious danger. "I was the only one in the car. I was the only car in the accident. So yes, it was my fault, it had to be," Doty stated. "But I feel it was more that the damn car didn’t recognize the train."

This incident highlights a critical concern: the potential for driver complacency due to overreliance on autonomous technology. Doty admitted that he had grown accustomed to the FSD system, which he felt was generally more cautious than human drivers. However, this incident, along with a previous near-collision with a train, has cast doubt on the reliability of Tesla's self-driving capabilities.

The Broader Implications for Tesla's FSD

Tesla's Full Self-Driving mode is marketed as a revolutionary step towards autonomous driving, but it remains in a beta phase, requiring active driver supervision. Despite its advanced features, the technology is not fully autonomous and still demands driver vigilance. Tesla's website emphasizes this, stating, "The currently enabled Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is aware of Doty's incident and is gathering more information. This follows numerous probes into Tesla's Autopilot and FSD systems due to concerns about their safety and efficacy.

Legal and Financial Repercussions

Following the accident, Doty received a citation for "failure to control" his vehicle, which he contested by arguing the involvement of FSD. The court agreed to strike the citation if Doty could prove the damages to the railroad were covered. Tesla has yet to comment on the incident or the video, which has since gone viral, amassing millions of views.

Previous Incidents and Ongoing Concerns

This is not an isolated case. In November 2022, a Tesla in FSD mode abruptly stopped on a freeway, causing an eight-car pileup. An NHTSA report highlighted numerous crashes involving FSD, criticizing the system's insufficient controls which could lead to driver disengagement and avoidable accidents.

The Path Forward for Autonomous Driving

Doty's experience underscores the importance of rigorous testing and regulatory oversight for autonomous vehicle technologies. While advancements in self-driving technology hold great promise, ensuring their reliability and safety is paramount. As Tesla continues to develop its FSD system, it must address these critical issues to regain public trust and advance towards a truly autonomous future.

The near-collision involving Craig Doty's Tesla highlights significant concerns regarding the safety and reliability of Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology. As the debate over autonomous vehicles continues, it is clear that rigorous testing, regulatory oversight, and transparent communication with users are essential to advancing this transformative technology safely.
