The Greatest Spectacle in Racing Shatters Viewership Records Despite Weather Delay

NBC Sports Sees Record-Breaking Viewership for the Indianapolis 500 with Over 6 Million Tuning in for the Final Lap.

The Indianapolis 500, often referred to as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," captivated millions of viewers this year, even in the face of a nearly four-hour weather delay. NBC Sports reported that its coverage of Sunday’s thrilling event averaged 5.34 million viewers across NBC, Peacock, and NBC Sports digital platforms according to preliminary numbers. This marks an 8% increase over the 2023 race and a 10% rise compared to 2022.

A Race to Remember

The viewership peaked at an astounding 6.46 million from 7:30-7:45 p.m. ET, as Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden executed a breathtaking final lap to overtake Pato O’Ward. This victory made Newgarden the first back-to-back winner of the Indy 500 since Helio Castroneves in 2001-02. The race was notable for its high level of competition, with an Indy 500 record of 18 different drivers leading at least one lap.

Streaming Milestones

In addition to its impressive television ratings, the 2024 Indianapolis 500 also set new records for streaming. The race became the most-streamed IndyCar event ever, achieving an average minute audience of 286,000 viewers across Peacock and NBC Sports digital platforms. This milestone underscores the growing trend of sports fans turning to digital platforms for live event coverage.

Unprecedented Engagement

The increased viewership and streaming numbers reflect not only the enduring popularity of the Indianapolis 500 but also the effective promotion and accessibility provided by NBC Sports. By leveraging both traditional broadcast and modern streaming services, NBC Sports ensured that fans could engage with the event in the manner most convenient for them, contributing to these record-breaking numbers.

Looking Ahead

As final ratings are set to be released on Wednesday, these preliminary figures already indicate a significant success for NBC Sports and the Indianapolis 500. The ability to draw such a large audience, even with the challenge of a weather delay, highlights the race's undiminished allure and the strategic effectiveness of multi-platform broadcasting.
