"The Marvels" vs. "The Flash": A Comparative Analysis of 2023's Biggest Box Office Bombs

Marvel Studios' "The Marvels" outpaces "The Flash" in financial losses in a surprising twist in the annual box office standings.

In the glamorous yet ruthless world of blockbuster cinema, financial success is as coveted as critical acclaim. Deadline's annual 'box office tournament' has revealed some startling figures in its retrospective glance at 2023, with Marvel Studios' "The Marvels" taking an unfortunate lead as the year's most significant box office bomb.

Financial Downfall of "The Marvels"

"The Marvels," despite its high hopes and substantial investment, emerged as the biggest financial disappointment of the year. Disney sunk a colossal $455 million into the production, marketing, distribution, and other associated costs. Despite such a hefty outlay, the film's total revenue only reached a modest $218 million. This stark discrepancy led to a staggering net loss of $237 million.

The breakdown of the movie's earnings shows a global theatrical return of only $88 million from a $206 million gross, supplemented by $40 million from rentals and purchases and $90 million from streaming platforms. While a $55 million subsidy from the UK for filming reduced the net loss to $182 million, the deficit remained substantial, cementing the film's status as the top financial flop of the year.

"The Flash" Runs a Close Second

Not far behind in this less enviable competition was Warner Bros.' "The Flash," which ended up with a net loss of $155 million. The production and marketing of "The Flash" demanded a significant $405 million, but the returns were insufficient to cover the investment. The film earned $115 million from a global box office of $271.3 million, with additional revenue from rentals and streaming amounting to $135 million. While "The Flash" managed to perform slightly better than earlier projections, it still registered a substantial loss.

Other Notable Losses

2023 also saw other significant financial letdowns, including "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" with a $143 million shortfall and Disney's "Wish" and "Haunted Mansion," which lost $131 million and $117 million, respectively. Each of these films struggled to recoup their massive expenditures amidst varying audience receptions and competitive market conditions.

As the dust settles on the financial upheavals within the film industry for 2023, the lessons remain clear. The high-risk, high-reward nature of blockbuster filmmaking continues to be a challenging venture.
