Apple Needs To Focus On Making AI Useful, Not Flashy

Google and Microsoft have turned their developer conferences into showcases of their generative AI capabilities, making next week's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) a pivotal moment for Apple.

The tech giant is expected to debut "Apple Intelligence," but it faces immense pressure to catch up in the AI race. While the temptation to overpromise is strong, Apple must prioritize reliability and usefulness over flashy features.

Reliability First

Apple's devices are some of the most popular in the world, and their AI features should enhance their utility. Unlike many AI-powered tools that rely on cloud connectivity, Apple has the opportunity to implement useful features directly on devices. This approach could make AI functionalities more reliable and accessible. For instance, offline transcriptions for the Voice Memo and Notes apps could significantly improve user experience without depending on an internet connection.

Expected announcements include notification summaries, web page summaries, basic text generation, and photo editing. However, these features are already prevalent in numerous other apps. Apple needs to ensure its implementations are seamless and superior to stand out in a crowded field.

Privacy First

Apple's commitment to privacy will likely shape its approach to AI. The company might restrict AI capabilities to certain devices—like the iPhone 15 Pro and M1-equipped iPads or Macs—and make them opt-in. This cautious strategy reflects Apple's desire to avoid user backlash, especially given recent controversies.

The company faced criticism for its iPad “Crush” ad, perceived as undervaluing creative tools and the effort behind artistic creation. Given AI's contentious reputation among creators, Apple will probably avoid controversial moves and adopt a non-inflammatory stance on AI integration.

Improving Siri

A significant expected change is a revamp of Siri to enhance its understanding and accuracy. Currently, Siri struggles with multitasking—for instance, it cannot set multiple timers correctly. While these issues might not require advanced generative AI, a Siri overhaul should address them.

If Siri doesn't gain deeper access to apps, Apple can still enhance user experience by introducing an AI assistant to help create complex Siri shortcuts for multistep tasks. This would make Siri more versatile and user-friendly.

Strategic AI Partnerships

There are rumors that Apple will announce a partnership with OpenAI to power its AI features. The extent of Apple Intelligence's reliance on this deal remains to be seen. Given AI's well-known issues with accuracy and bias, Apple might choose to limit its involvement in content-related AI features to avoid potential pitfalls.

Many companies have made grand promises about AI, only to face backlash due to inaccuracies or biases. Google and OpenAI, for example, have had to retract AI features due to errors or copyright issues. Apple may steer clear of relying heavily on large language models (LLMs) for content generation to avoid similar problems.

Conclusion

As Apple prepares to unveil its AI advancements at the WWDC, the focus should be on making AI features reliable and genuinely useful. By emphasizing on-device capabilities, privacy, and improving Siri, Apple can differentiate itself in a competitive market. Strategic partnerships and a cautious approach to content generation will help the company navigate the complexities of AI implementation. In doing so, Apple can regain its position as a leader in innovative, user-friendly technology.
