DJI FlyCart 30 Achieves Historic First Delivery On Mount Everest

DJI’s FlyCart 30 made history by flying the first drone mission to a camp on Mount Everest, the company revealed. 

 

The test sparked a movement by Nepal to encompass more drones in delivering equipment and removing trash, saving lives. In a groundbreaking event, DJI's FlyCart 30 successfully executed the first drone delivery to Camp 1 on Mount Everest. This mission marks a significant advancement in the use of drone technology for high-altitude logistics, showcasing the potential for drones to enhance safety and efficiency in one of the most challenging environments on earth.

A Historic Flight to New Heights

On a clear day, the FlyCart 30 drone took off from Everest Base Camp, ascending to an altitude between 5,300 and 6,000 meters above sea level to reach Camp 1. This remote location, situated on the far side of a perilous icefall, is notoriously difficult to access. Traditionally, supplies are carried by Sherpas, who risk their lives navigating the dangerous terrain. However, DJI's drone completed the journey in just 12 minutes, a testament to its advanced capabilities.

The FlyCart 30's cargo included three oxygen bottles and 1.5 kilograms of other essential supplies for climbers. Equally important, the drone's return trip carried down trash produced by climbers, addressing a significant environmental issue on the mountain.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

The Khumbu Icefall, a critical yet treacherous part of the route to Camp 1, has claimed many lives. Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, a mountain guide from Imagine Nepal, highlighted the dangers, stating, “We need to spend 6-8 hours each day walking through this icefall. Last year I lost three Sherpas. If we’re not lucky, if our time is not right, we lose our life there.”

The introduction of drones like the FlyCart 30 offers a safer alternative. Unlike helicopters, which are limited by weather conditions and high operational costs, drones provide a reliable means of transporting supplies. They operate effectively in various weather conditions, are more cost-efficient, and significantly reduce the risk to human life.

Government Support and Future Prospects

Following the successful trial runs, the Nepalese government officially contracted drone supply operations to Everest Camp 1 on May 22, 2024. This decision reflects a growing recognition of the role that drones can play in high-altitude logistics. By incorporating drone technology, Nepal aims to improve the safety of climbers and Sherpas, reduce logistical costs, and address environmental concerns on Everest.
