Gamers Divided Over New OWO Haptic Suit That Delivers Real Pain

The Gaming Skin That Promises To 'Open A Portal Into Extraordinary Worlds'

The gaming community is abuzz with controversy following the release of a groundbreaking product: an electronic bodysuit that delivers physical sensations, including pain, to enhance the gaming experience. Spanish company OWO has introduced the OWO Haptic Suit, a device that allows gamers to feel the same physical sensations as their in-game characters. By donning this specially designed bodysuit, players of games like Fortnite and Tekken can feel the rush of driving through the Nitrodome or the impact of being hit by Jin Kazama.

Retailing at €499 (£539.12), the OWO Haptic Suit promises to let wearers "physically feel everything that happens in a video game." According to OWO, their patented haptic system can create an infinite array of sensations using electrical pulses, termed Sensations Technology.

How the OWO Haptic Suit Works

"This patented haptic system is unique because we can create infinite different sensations thanks to our Sensations Technology," reads the official product listing. "OWO uses trains of pulse (electrical pulse) to generate infinite different sensations." The suit can simulate a wide range of sensations, from the sharp pain of a stab wound to the discomfort of walking long distances without rest. Medium reports that the suit can even mimic the heaviness of a virtual backpack and cause muscle spasms. For those hesitant to experience intense pain, the suit offers customization options through a dedicated mobile app, allowing users to adjust the pain threshold to their preference. Beyond gaming, the suit can also be used to enhance immersion in movies and music.

Controversial Reception

The OWO Haptic Suit has sparked a heated debate among gamers. Popular TikTok user GingasVR demonstrated the suit, leading to a flurry of reactions on Reddit. One user commented, "No thank you. I am not a masochist." Another added, "Let's not play Elden Ring on that." The prospect of experiencing pain while gaming has garnered mixed reactions. Some find the idea intriguing and are eager to try it, even suggesting it could be paired with Omni treadmills for a fully immersive VR experience. Others are repelled by the concept, citing the enjoyment of consequence-free bravery as a primary reason they play video games.

A New Frontier for VR Gaming?

While the OWO Haptic Suit might appeal to thrill-seekers and those looking to push the boundaries of immersive gaming, it raises important questions about the nature of gaming and the lengths to which technology can or should go to create realistic experiences. The suit is only recommended for users over 18, emphasizing the potential intensity of the sensations it delivers. As virtual reality technology continues to evolve, products like the OWO Haptic Suit represent a bold step forward. Whether it will become a staple in the gaming world or remain a niche product for the bravest gamers remains to be seen. For now, it offers a unique way to step into extraordinary worlds, one pulse at a time.
