Huawei's Leap In AI And Operating Systems: A Decade Of Breakthroughs

How Huawei Surpassed Industry Giants In Just Ten Years

China's tech giant Huawei Technologies has announced significant advancements in its operating systems and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, claiming it has achieved in ten years what took the United States and Europe over thirty years to accomplish. This bold statement was made by Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, during the opening of a three-day developer conference in Dongguan.

HarmonyOS: The Rise of an Independent Operating System

Huawei's proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS, launched in 2019, has made substantial progress since its inception. Initially developed in response to U.S. technology restrictions that cut Huawei off from Google's Android support, HarmonyOS is now installed on over 900 million devices. Yu emphasized the rapid development and success of HarmonyOS, stating, "Harmony has made major breakthroughs. You can say in 10 years we've achieved what it took our European and American counterparts more than 30 years to do, in terms of building the core technology of an independent operating system."

AI Advancements: Ascend Infrastructure's Growing Influence

In addition to its operating system achievements, Huawei has also made significant strides in artificial intelligence. The company's Ascend AI infrastructure, the most powerful AI setup developed by a Chinese company, has become the second most popular globally, trailing only Nvidia. This growth in AI capability marks a critical milestone for Huawei as it seeks to establish itself as a leader in technology innovation.

Capitalizing on the Internet of Things

Yu pointed out that while operating systems and software have traditionally been dominated by Europe and the United States, the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has created new opportunities for Huawei. The company's advancements in this area have positioned it to potentially overtake its Western competitors.

A Renaissance in Huawei's Smartphone Business

Huawei's smartphone business has experienced a revival, particularly following the launch of the Mate 60 last year, which featured an improved China-made chip. This new development has led to a 68% increase in Harmony-equipped smartphone sales in the first five months of the year. Furthermore, in the first quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS surpassed Apple's iOS to become the second best-selling mobile operating system in China, with a 17% market share, according to research firm Counterpoint.

The Road Ahead for Huawei

Huawei's rapid advancements in operating systems and AI signify a transformative period for the company. By achieving in ten years what took other regions decades, Huawei has demonstrated its ability to innovate and adapt in a competitive global market. As the company continues to build on its successes, it remains poised to further disrupt and redefine the technology landscape.
