Marvel's “Thunderbolts*” Is ‘Avoiding CGI’ For A Human-Focused Story

Marvel Studios Aims To Reduce CGI In "Thunderbolts*"

Marvel Studios has faced significant criticism in recent years for the quality of visual effects in its films and TV series. Horror stories from VFX workers in mid-2022 highlighted issues of 'crunch' conditions, unrealistic expectations, and demands for multiple versions to satisfy indecisive executives and filmmakers. This situation culminated in Marvel's in-house VFX team becoming the first in the industry to file for a unionization election.

A New Approach in 2024 Releases

In response to these criticisms, Marvel is shifting its approach with its upcoming 2024 releases, including "Captain America: Brave New World," "Thunderbolts*," "Daredevil: Born Again," and "Blade." These films are expected to significantly reduce their reliance on visual effects, focusing instead on more practical filmmaking techniques.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus on "Thunderbolts*"

"Thunderbolts*" is at the forefront of this new direction. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), shared insights about the production with The New York Times. According to Louis-Dreyfus, the film prioritizes a human-centric narrative, moving away from heavy CGI use.

“It’s very well organized. Very methodical. And I don’t mean that in a negative way. Particularly on this film, they’re very much focused on, frankly, the human story, believe it or not. They’re trying to sort of go back to their roots, as it were. And so there’s a lot of focus on that. They’re trying to stay away from as much C.G.I. or whatever as possible, so that the stunts are, like, everywhere. And in fact, I had to do a couple."

She added humorously, “Well, I’m making this out to sound like I’m flying through the air like Captain America or whatever, but I’m not. It’s just a very, very, very, very brief stunt.”

Focus on Practical Effects

The cast of "Thunderbolts*" includes characters like U.S. Agent, Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, and Red Guardian, all of whom are more grounded, with limited superpowers. This choice allows for more practical effects and stunts, enhancing the film’s realistic feel. The emphasis on practical effects over CGI aims to create a more immersive experience for audiences.

Anticipation for "Thunderbolts*"

Set to open next summer, "Thunderbolts*" is generating buzz for its back-to-basics approach. By focusing on human stories and minimizing CGI, Marvel hopes to deliver a fresh and engaging cinematic experience, rectifying past criticisms and setting a new standard for future productions.

Conclusion

Marvel Studios' pivot towards practical effects in "Thunderbolts*" and other upcoming films marks a significant change in its production strategy. By reducing reliance on CGI and focusing on human stories, Marvel aims to address past criticisms and offer audiences a more grounded and immersive experience. As anticipation builds for "Thunderbolts*" and its summer release, fans are eager to see this new approach in action.
