Revolutionizing Broadcast Workflows With Blackmagic Cloud Sync

Real-Time Editing: Blackmagic Cloud Sync Breaks New Ground

Blackmagic Design has unveiled a game-changing feature for its Blackmagic Cloud storage platform: Blackmagic Cloud Sync. This innovative tool allows cameras to sync media directly into a DaVinci Resolve bin while recording, enabling editors to start working on footage seconds after it’s captured. This breakthrough is set to transform broadcast workflows, offering unprecedented efficiency and speed in video production.

How Blackmagic Cloud Sync Works

Blackmagic Cloud Sync leverages the capabilities of recent Blackmagic cameras such as the Cinema Camera 6K, Pyxis, Ursa Cine, and Ursa Broadcast G2. These cameras can record a full resolution HD proxy in the H.264 codec, which is then synced to Blackmagic Cloud in real-time. This synchronized footage is available immediately to all DaVinci Resolve workstations connected to the same cloud project.

Blackmagic explains, “Within seconds, the editors can see media arriving in real-time and start editing, even while the camera continues to record.” This means that editors, regardless of their location, can begin working on media as soon as it is recorded, effectively eliminating the delay traditionally associated with transferring and importing footage.

Setting Up and Using Blackmagic Cloud Sync

To utilize this feature, users need to log in to Blackmagic Cloud and select a DaVinci Resolve project before recording. Once recording commences, the footage will automatically sync to connected workstations. Editors and colorists can then start processing the incoming proxy footage in real-time.

A significant advantage of this system is its multi-sync feature, which displays all connected cameras in a multi-view setup. This allows editors to select the best angles and synchronize footage from multiple cameras effortlessly. “It is all automatic!” promises Blackmagic, highlighting the user-friendly nature of this setup.

Live Editing and Post-Production

The live syncing capability is akin to live streaming into the edit software. As the media syncs into the viewer just ahead of the playhead, editors can see the play indicator jump back as each new segment arrives, allowing them to continue editing seamlessly. The clip icon in the bin will show a red record indicator to denote that the clip is still recording on the remote camera.

This concurrent post-production and shooting setup ensures that as the camera records, footage is instantly available for editing and grading. This looped workflow means graded footage can be sent back to the production side if there is a local DaVinci Resolve workstation.

Practical Applications and Industry Impact

For live events where timing is critical, Blackmagic Cloud Sync offers a revolutionary workflow. Editors can start working on footage that has already been shot while the camera is still recording, significantly speeding up the post-production process. This means quicker turnaround times and the ability to deliver edited content faster than ever before.

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, underscores the significance of this feature: “Live syncing media from our cameras directly into DaVinci Resolve bins is a workflow revolution. This simply has never been possible before. It’s just like live streaming into the DaVinci Resolve bin, even when dozens of DaVinci Resolve systems are collaborating via the same Blackmagic Cloud project. This is very exciting and it looks amazing when you see it working live!”

Availability and Future Updates

The new Blackmagic Cloud live sync feature will be available in public beta within the next week or two as a free download for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and Blackmagic Ursa Broadcast G2. The feature will also be available in the Blackmagic Camera app for iPhone in an upcoming update. Additional cameras, such as the Pyxis 6K and Ursa Cine 12K, will receive this feature shortly. Users with Blackmagic Cloud media sync plans can access the live sync feature at no extra cost. For more information on Blackmagic Cloud media sync plans, visit Blackmagic Design’s website.

Conclusion

Blackmagic Cloud Sync is set to revolutionize the video production industry, offering real-time editing capabilities that were previously unimaginable. By enabling editors to work on footage seconds after it’s recorded, Blackmagic is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in broadcast workflows. This innovation promises to save time, streamline processes, and enhance the overall efficiency of video production.
