The Future of Filmmaking: Ashton Kutcher On AI And Generative Video Tools

Ashton Kutcher: "Soon You’ll Be Able To Render A Whole Movie Using AI"

The Leap Forward in AI Technology for Filmmaking

Ashton Kutcher, renowned actor and tech enthusiast, recently shared his insights into the future of filmmaking at the Berggruen Salon in Los Angeles. In a conversation with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Kutcher discussed OpenAI’s generative video tool, Sora, and its potential to revolutionize the film industry.

"I have a beta version of it, and it’s pretty amazing," Kutcher said about Sora. This cutting-edge platform can generate realistic footage, creating 10 to 15-second videos that appear strikingly real, despite some current limitations in understanding physics. "If you look at the generation of this that existed one year ago as compared to Sora, it’s leaps and bounds. There’s footage in it that I would say you could easily use in a major motion picture or a television show," he added.

Cost-Efficiency and Creative Freedom

One of the significant advantages of AI in filmmaking is the potential to reduce production costs. Kutcher highlighted the economic benefits, noting, "Why would you go out and shoot an establishing shot of a house in a television show when you could just create the establishing shot for $100? To go out and shoot it would cost you thousands of dollars." This cost-efficiency extends to action scenes, where AI can replace the need for stunt performers.

Kutcher demonstrated the software's capabilities by creating footage of a runner escaping a desert sandstorm. "I, in five minutes, rendered a video of an ultramarathoner running across the desert being chased by a sandstorm. And it looks exactly like that," he explained. The ease and speed of generating high-quality video content with AI could significantly change how films are made.

The Rise of Personalized Content

Kutcher also discussed the broader implications of AI-generated video for content creation. With advancements in processors from companies like Nvidia, video-generating platforms are set to become even more powerful. "You’ll be able to render a whole movie. You’ll just come up with an idea for a movie, then it will write the script, then you’ll input the script into the video generator, and it will generate the movie," he said. This shift means that individuals could potentially create and watch their own personalized movies.

However, this surge in content creation presents a challenge: oversaturation. "What’s going to happen is there is going to be more content than there are eyeballs on the planet to consume it," Kutcher pointed out. The quality of content will need to improve dramatically to stand out in a crowded market.

Industry Concerns and the Call for Regulation

While the potential of AI in filmmaking is exciting, not everyone is optimistic. Tyler Perry, a prominent filmmaker, halted an $800 million studio expansion project in Atlanta after seeing Sora’s capabilities. He expressed concerns about the future of the industry and the need for regulation. "There’s got to be some sort of regulations in order to protect us," Perry told The Hollywood Reporter. He emphasized the importance of considering the impact on those who have built careers in the industry. "I just hope that as people are embracing this technology and as companies are moving to reduce costs and save the bottom line, that there’ll be some sort of thought and some sort of compassion for humanity and the people that have worked in this industry and built careers and lives, that there’s some sort of thought for them."

Conclusion: A New Era of Filmmaking

Ashton Kutcher’s insights into AI and generative video tools like Sora highlight a transformative period for the film industry. The technology promises unprecedented creative freedom and cost-efficiency but also poses significant challenges and ethical considerations. As the industry navigates this new landscape, the balance between innovation and regulation will be crucial to ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for all stakeholders.
