A Glimmer of Hope for "Supernatural" Fans
Jared Padalecki, known for his iconic role as Sam Winchester on "Supernatural," has recently shared his thoughts on a potential return to the beloved series. In a candid interview on Tommy DiDario’s "I’ve Never Said This Before" podcast, Padalecki delved into what it would take for him to revisit the world of "Supernatural," a series that holds a special place in the hearts of many fans.
The Legacy of "Supernatural"
"The CW" has had many successful shows over the years, but few have matched the longevity and impact of "Supernatural." The show debuted in 2005 and ran for an impressive 15 seasons, concluding its epic journey in 2020 after 327 episodes. "Supernatural" became a cultural phenomenon, known for its compelling storytelling, complex characters, and devoted fanbase. Its end marked not just the conclusion of a series, but the end of an era for "The CW," which has seen other long-running shows like those in the Arrowverse also come to an end.
The Possibility of a Reboot
Despite its conclusion, both Padalecki and his co-star Jensen Ackles have expressed interest in potentially rebooting the series. However, Padalecki is clear about his conditions for a return. During the podcast, he mentioned that a return to "Supernatural" would need to be more akin to a limited series rather than another full-fledged season:
“I will say this. I don’t want to do another 15 years of Supernatural. I don’t want to do another 5 years of Supernatural, I am dying to do a reboot of Supernatural akin to the Gilmore Girls reboot. Here are four one-and-a-half-hour episodes. We’ll shoot it in three months. I think Jensen [Ackles] and I both said in 2020, ‘we’d love to revisit these characters, this world. Give us five years.’ Which is next year. And I see him often. And we talk often. I think he and I are both really eager to do it. I’m certain I’ll put the flannel on again and play Sam Winchester.”
The Timing and Schedule
The timing for such a reboot seems more feasible now, given that Padalecki’s current series, "Walker," was recently cancelled by "The CW." This change in his schedule could allow for the short, intense filming period he envisions for a limited "Supernatural" reboot. Additionally, there’s the consideration of former "Supernatural" showrunner Eric Kripke, who is reportedly thinking about involving Padalecki in the final season of "The Boys." This could align schedules and creative energies for a potential "Supernatural" revival.
A Reunion on the Horizon?
Both Padalecki and Ackles have maintained a close relationship since the end of "Supernatural," frequently discussing the possibility of returning to their roles as the Winchester brothers. The idea of a limited series, similar to the successful "Gilmore Girls" reboot, seems to be a realistic and exciting prospect for fans who have longed to see the duo back in action. Padalecki’s enthusiasm and openness about the idea suggest that, while a full series may be off the table, a shorter, more focused return could be in the cards.
While the future of a "Supernatural" reboot remains uncertain, Jared Padalecki’s recent comments provide a hopeful glimpse into what could be. The possibility of a limited series offers a way to revisit the beloved characters and world of "Supernatural" without the commitment of another long-term project. Fans can hold onto the hope that the Winchester brothers might once again don their flannels and take on new supernatural challenges, even if only for a brief time.
