Tom Cruise Still Eyes ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Sequel After A Decade

Doug Liman’s Continued Interest

Tom Cruise continues to show interest in a sequel to the 2014 sci-fi action hit "Edge of Tomorrow," according to director Doug Liman. Speaking to Empire magazine, Liman revealed that he and Cruise recently rewatched the film and remain in touch about the potential for a follow-up, despite the long gap since the original's release.

A Decade-Long Conversation

Doug Liman emphasized that the idea of "Edge of Tomorrow 2" is far from dead. "No, we keep talking about it," Liman said. "We love that world." The director expressed his admiration for the film during a rewatch with Cruise. "Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years. I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’"

The Original Film's Legacy

Released in 2014, "Edge of Tomorrow" was based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel "All You Need Is Kill." The film starred Tom Cruise as a soldier who relives the same day repeatedly in a bid to thwart an alien invasion threatening humanity. Co-starring Emily Blunt, the film was a moderate box office success, grossing $370 million worldwide. However, it has gained a dedicated following among action movie fans over the years.

The Continued Interest from the Cast

Both Liman and Cruise, along with Emily Blunt, have maintained their enthusiasm for a sequel throughout the years. Blunt, in particular, shared her ongoing discussions with Liman about the project. Speaking on Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast, she said, “Doug and I talk all the time about it. I know Tom wants to do it, hopefully, at some point. But it’s timing, but it’s also been 10 years since we made it… There was an amazing script in the works, but I think it would only have worked if we shot it eight years ago. I’m not saying we’re that ancient, but you have to factor in it’s been 10 years.”

The Challenges of Sequel Development

Warner Bros. announced in 2019 that it was officially developing a sequel, but there have been no substantial updates since then. The studio's recent deal with Tom Cruise has led fans to speculate about the inclusion of "Edge of Tomorrow 2" in future projects. Liman reflected on the enduring nature of his films, stating, “I haven’t necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends. ‘Bourne Identity’ lost to ‘Scooby-Doo’ [on] its opening weekend. And ‘Swingers’ came and went from the theaters. What I’ve come to understand is, I’m making movies for the long term.”

The Path Forward

While the timing and logistics of making "Edge of Tomorrow 2" remain uncertain, the commitment from its key players suggests that the project is still very much alive. Liman, Cruise, and Blunt's shared affection for the film's universe keeps the hope for a sequel burning bright. As fans eagerly await further news, the film's legacy continues to grow, cementing its place as a modern sci-fi classic.

The next critical hurdle was passed last Friday when the bill, included in the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, narrowly passed in the House by a vote of 217 to 199. The bill's next stop is the Sena
