In a major shake-up within the video game industry, over two dozen staff members at Annapurna Interactive have resigned, according to a recent report from Bloomberg. This mass exit includes key figures like former president Nathan Gary, who had been a central force behind the company's success. The news follows failed negotiations to spin off Annapurna Interactive from its parent company, Annapurna Pictures, owned by Megan Ellison.
A Leadership Exodus
On September 6, Annapurna announced that Nathan Gary, along with the co-heads of its indie gaming division, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vell, would be stepping down. This week’s report reveals that their departure was followed by more than two dozen staffers from the company’s video game division. The resignations have raised concerns among Annapurna’s indie game partners, who rely on the company’s backing for their projects.
The failed spin-off attempt was cited as the key factor behind the mass resignation. Bloomberg’s report suggests that the goal was to establish Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity, separating it from the broader film and media operations under Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures. When those negotiations fell through, the core leadership team and much of the staff opted to leave the company.
Annapurna Interactive’s Impact
Since its inception in 2016, Annapurna Interactive has made a significant mark in the indie gaming scene, producing critically acclaimed and award-winning titles such as What Remains of Edith Finch and Stray. The latter became a major success, selling millions of copies in its first month of release and winning top honors in the gaming world, comparable to an Oscar in the film industry.
Annapurna Interactive’s games are known for their narrative depth and innovative gameplay. Titles like Outer Wilds and Cocoon have further solidified its reputation as a leader in the indie gaming space. Despite facing financial difficulties in 2019 and 2020, which saw the company scale back its film production efforts, its gaming division continued to thrive.
The Future of Annapurna Interactive
Hector Sanchez, who was one of the founding members of Annapurna Interactive and previously worked at Epic Games, has been appointed to oversee the company’s gaming operations. Sanchez’s new role as president of interactive and new media places him in charge of steering Annapurna Interactive through this turbulent period. Whether the company will retain its standing in the indie gaming industry remains to be seen, especially in light of these sudden departures.
The resignations have left many in the gaming industry and Annapurna’s development partners uncertain about the future. With Annapurna Interactive’s leadership in flux, developers and players alike will be watching closely to see how the company adapts to this unexpected setback.
Annapurna’s Broader Portfolio
While Annapurna Interactive’s gaming division faces challenges, its parent company is still active in other areas of entertainment. Annapurna Pictures is set to return to theaters with Marielle Heller’s horror comedy Nightbitch, starring Amy Adams, which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Additionally, the company has ventured into animated features with the release of Nimona on Netflix and is also producing the animated TV series Sausage Party: Foodtopia for Amazon.
Despite the turmoil in its gaming division, Annapurna’s diverse portfolio in film, TV, and interactive media keeps it relevant across multiple entertainment sectors. How the company will navigate its future in gaming remains a critical question, especially with the resignation of such a significant portion of its interactive team.
