Pat McAfee Predicts ManningCast Will 'Become Clips For A Lot Of People' As Ratings Decline

The beloved ManningCast, featuring Peyton and Eli Manning, has been a fan favorite for several NFL seasons. However, Pat McAfee, like many NFL fans, predicts that the alternate broadcast might be undergoing a shift in how it’s consumed. In a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee shared his thoughts on the future of the show, hinting that social media clips may soon dominate its audience engagement as live viewership continues to decline.

The Changing Dynamics of Monday Night Football Coverage

During a discussion about ESPN’s Monday Night Football coverage, McAfee touched on the growing divide between traditional and alternative broadcasts. While Bill Belichick’s guest appearance on the ManningCast was highly anticipated, McAfee admitted he had mostly shifted back to watching the primary broadcast with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman on ESPN and ABC.

McAfee noted the distinct appeal of both broadcasts. The Buck and Aikman duo is known for their polished, award-winning commentary, while the ManningCast delivers a more relaxed, conversational approach. Yet, McAfee believes the future of the ManningCast lies in its ability to produce viral social media content rather than retaining viewers for the full broadcast.

“That’s a fascinating little thing that’s going on between Joe and Troy’s broadcast version, which is historically award-worthy,” McAfee remarked. “And then the ManningCast, I think the ManningCast is going to become clips for a lot of people.”

Why NFL Fans Are Switching Back to Traditional Broadcasts

While the ManningCast offers a unique blend of celebrity guest appearances and casual football chatter, it comes with a downside: it’s harder to actually follow the game. McAfee echoed a sentiment that many NFL fans share: the ManningCast can be distracting, and viewers may find themselves missing key moments in the game.

“You do get lost,” McAfee admitted. “You don’t really get to watch the game whenever you’re watching [the ManningCast]. It’s very hard to pay attention to everything going on.”

McAfee himself still tunes into the ManningCast during Monday night games but noted that when he’s fully locked in on the action, he prefers Buck and Aikman’s traditional coverage. “I flip back and forth as well,” McAfee shared. “But I was a strictly ManningCast person for a bit, and it got to the point where I don’t even know what the f*** is going on.”

Declining Viewership and the Evolution of the ManningCast

The decline in live viewership for the ManningCast isn’t a sudden development. Ratings have been dropping steadily since its peak in 2021, when at least 1 million viewers regularly tuned in. The premiere episode this year, however, drew the fewest viewers since the show launched.

In response, Peyton Manning acknowledged that the show needed to bring more football analysis into the mix. This shift led to the addition of guests like Bill Belichick, who offer more football-centered insights. The Mannings also began cutting off celebrity guests who wandered too far off-topic or interrupted important game moments. Despite these adjustments, the show’s future may lie in its ability to generate bite-sized, shareable content rather than competing with the primary broadcast for live viewership.

At its core, the ManningCast is more akin to a podcast than a traditional sports broadcast, with conversation often diverging from the game itself. For NFL diehards who want detailed analysis and game coverage, this laid-back format can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a bonus. As McAfee pointed out, “That’s 2024 football.”

What’s Next for the ManningCast?

The ManningCast isn’t disappearing anytime soon, but its role may evolve. As social media becomes an increasingly dominant force in how sports fans engage with content, McAfee’s prediction may come true: more viewers could turn to Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok for their ManningCast highlights rather than sitting through the entire broadcast.

For now, the competition between Buck and Aikman’s traditional broadcast and the ManningCast continues, but it’s clear that the alternative format is facing challenges in keeping its audience fully engaged for the full game. Whether the show adapts to maintain live viewers or embraces its potential as a clip-generating machine remains to be seen.
