The Future Of ‘Star Wars: The New Jedi Order’ Now In Doubt: What’s Next For Lucasfilm?

Lucasfilm’s Latest Attempt At Expanding the Star Wars saga, “New Jedi Order,” Starring Rey, Faces Major Delays And Uncertain Prospects.

In the summer of 2024, the rumor mill buzzed with reports that Lucasfilm’s next big “Star Wars” project, tentatively titled The New Jedi Order, would begin shooting in September. However, insiders, including film journalist Jordan Ruimy, were quick to dismiss these rumors. Now, it seems that the much-anticipated movie has been officially placed on hold, with its future hanging in the balance.

Behind the Scenes Drama: Script Struggles and Creative Differences

The initial excitement for The New Jedi Order has been tempered by reports of significant behind-the-scenes challenges. Steven Knight, best known for his work on Peaky Blinders, has been tasked with penning the script for the Rey-centered film. Yet despite working on it for over a year, a final draft has yet to be submitted to Lucasfilm. Knight has reportedly written four drafts, but they have been met with extensive feedback from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, who has pushed for continuous revisions.

This delay is even more concerning given that Knight was not the original screenwriter on the project. Previous drafts had been written by Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Justin Brit-Gibson, both of whom exited due to creative differences with Lucasfilm. The turnover in writers suggests deeper issues with the development of the script, which has now stretched on for over two years.

Is the Project in Trouble?

The recent update from industry insider Daniel Richtman only adds to the uncertainty. According to Richtman, the film needs significant revisions, and its production has been delayed until at least 2025, if it happens at all. While some hope remains for the project, Ruimy and others remain skeptical that it will ever see the light of day. In fact, Ruimy has hinted that the project may ultimately be scrapped entirely.

At the heart of the hesitation seems to be a larger question from Disney executives: Does the world need another Rey-focused film? While The New Jedi Order was expected to feature Rey as she trains a new generation of Jedi, echoing Luke Skywalker’s legacy in the original trilogy, the mixed reception of the Star Wars sequel trilogy—especially 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker—may have given the studio pause.
The Uncertain Role of Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Adding to the complications is the question of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s involvement as director. Hired by Disney to steer the Rey movie, Obaid-Chinoy was outspoken about her intent to feature a strong female lead shaping the future of the Star Wars franchise. However, recent reports suggest that her position at Lucasfilm might also be uncertain, casting doubt on whether she will remain attached to the project as it moves forward, if at all.

Obaid-Chinoy’s hiring was a statement from Lucasfilm about their desire to bring fresh perspectives into the Star Wars universe, especially by championing diverse voices. Whether or not she stays involved could reflect broader decisions about the film’s direction—or the potential collapse of the project altogether.

What’s Next for Star Wars?

While The New Jedi Order remains on hold, the Star Wars franchise is far from dormant. In fact, Disney currently has seven Star Wars projects in development, with big names attached to each. These include films from James Mangold, Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Shawn Levy, and Patty Jenkins.

The most likely to hit theaters first is Jon Favreau’s highly anticipated The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is already in production and slated for a May 2026 release. Favreau has become a key figure in the Star Wars universe, largely credited with revitalizing the franchise through his work on The Mandalorian.

The Future of the Franchise

The halt in production for The New Jedi Order doesn’t spell doom for Star Wars, but it does signal a period of reevaluation for Lucasfilm. With a crowded slate of projects, the studio may be taking a step back to prioritize its strongest prospects. Fan-favorite stories such as The Mandalorian and new projects like Mangold’s rumored exploration of the “first Jedi” are expected to take center stage.

At the same time, Disney’s uncertainty about the direction of the Rey movie underscores the larger challenge of balancing fan expectations with creative risks. Star Wars has always been a franchise that walks the line between honoring its legacy and pushing boundaries, and The New Jedi Order could have been a bold continuation of Rey’s story. Whether or not it moves forward, however, remains to be seen.

Final Thoughts

Star Wars: The New Jedi Order was intended to showcase the evolution of Rey’s character and the resurgence of the Jedi in a new generation. Yet, delays, script struggles, and creative uncertainty have put the project on ice, leaving fans to wonder if it will ever come to fruition. As Lucasfilm pivots to other ventures, one thing remains clear: the galaxy far, far away is still brimming with stories yet to be told. For now, it seems that The New Jedi Order may just become another chapter of "what could have been" in the Star Wars saga.
