Dwayne Johnson’s Experience Watching "Oppenheimer" In IMAX Sparks Ambitious Vision For His New Movie "Red One"
Dwayne Johnson, known for his larger-than-life roles and passion for top-notch movie experiences, found unexpected inspiration in Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic, Oppenheimer. Watching Oppenheimer in IMAX, seated where Nolan himself reviews his films, left Johnson in awe. In that moment, he knew he wanted his own film, Red One, to leverage the immersive impact of IMAX technology. The experience, he felt, could be a game-changer, offering audiences an unparalleled viewing experience for his action-packed holiday movie.
In a recent video interview with IMAX, Johnson opened up about how the unique experience influenced his ambitions for Red One, his upcoming Christmas action adventure. “Legitimately the biggest screens possible are IMAX,” Johnson said. “I was midway through shooting Red One, and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer in the IMAX theater where Christopher Nolan screens his movies. I even asked to sit where Chris sits.”
Sitting in Nolan’s seat, Johnson said, was surreal. The massive screen and razor-sharp sound engulfed him, enhancing the gravity and visual grandeur of Oppenheimer. Captivated, Johnson could only think about how incredible Red One would look with similar technology. “I remember texting [director Jake Kasdan] a picture of my bare chest and a picture of the screen, and we realized how cool [IMAX] would be,” Johnson shared, highlighting his enthusiasm to enhance Red One with the same immersive viewing experience.
However, despite Johnson’s high hopes, Red One is not being marketed as a full-scale IMAX release. Oppenheimer, which premiered in summer 2023, earned nearly $1 billion globally and brought Christopher Nolan substantial acclaim, including potential Oscars recognition for best picture and best director. Lead actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. were awarded accolades for their performances, underscoring the high bar set by the film.
In contrast, Red One faces an uphill battle, having reportedly cost $250 million to produce while making just $26 million in its initial international launch. Industry experts estimate the film’s U.S. opening on November 15 will land around $20 million, a comparatively modest sum. Critical response has also been lukewarm, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman describing it as lacking genuine Christmas spirit, and summarizing it as “an action movie… a kidnap-rescue thriller in which the doors to supply closets in toy stores are mystic portals, and an exercise in Christmas world-building.”
Johnson’s IMAX viewing experience reflects his passion for elevating the cinematic experience. By introducing larger-than-life visuals, surround sound, and the feeling of being truly enveloped by the film, Johnson’s vision for Red One is a promising shift in holiday action movies. As audiences prepare for Red One’s debut, his experiment with IMAX technology may well influence future productions, as more filmmakers and studios explore immersive experiences that bring action and adventure to life in ways never before seen.
