Hallmark Stars Gain Hollywood's Attention: Why They're No Longer Just "TV Actors"

Samantha Bergeson has a new article about Hallmark films on Indiewire. Hallmark Channel movies have a unique charm, drawing millions with heartwarming stories and familiar faces each holiday season. While Hallmark’s cozy “Countdown to Christmas” movies are beloved by audiences, industry insiders and some cinephiles have traditionally dismissed these productions as formulaic and lacking substance. Yet the stars of Hallmark, many of whom have been integral to the channel’s success, are now making strides to change that perception. Actors like Nikki Deloach and Kristoffer Polaha are proving that Hallmark talent can extend beyond their hallmark, so to speak, and rival Hollywood’s finest—without sacrificing the comforting stories fans adore.

The Hallmark Channel’s Appeal

Hallmark Channel movies offer something that few other networks can replicate: a familiar, family-friendly escape that audiences can rely on. As Deloach noted, these movies present a safe space where viewers can immerse themselves in stories of love, joy, and happy endings. “There’s always a happy ending, and in a world where so much is unknown, audiences want to be able to turn something on and know that for those 90 minutes, they can escape into a world that is full of love and hope,” she said. The formula of lighthearted storytelling has created an audience that spans all ages and is fiercely loyal.

Despite this loyalty, Hallmark actors are often typecast by the industry. Deloach, who started acting on the Disney Channel’s “All New Mickey Mouse Club” alongside stars like Britney Spears and Ryan Gosling, has long had a varied career. With gritty roles in shows like “Awkward,” “Mad Men,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” she is no stranger to dramatic storytelling. Yet, when she voiced an interest in writing and starring in Hallmark films, her then-manager scoffed at the idea. Still, Deloach persisted, driven by the response from her hometown community and the joy these films brought to audiences like her grandmother.

Chad Michael Murray

Chad Michael Murray, known for his breakout role on One Tree Hill, has become a beloved figure in the Hallmark universe, bringing a mix of charm and relatability to his roles. Since joining Hallmark, Murray has starred in a variety of romantic comedies and seasonal favorites, such as Write Before Christmas and The Angel Falls Christmas. His Hallmark characters often embody a blend of the classic "boy next door" appeal with depth, adding nuance to the network’s family-friendly storytelling. With his well-established fanbase from teen dramas and Hollywood films, Murray has helped Hallmark expand its audience, drawing in viewers who may not have traditionally tuned in.

Redefining "Hallmark Actors" as Hollywood Multifaceted Talents

Beyond the comfort of Hallmark’s holiday movies, the stars are expanding into other creative areas, working to bring quality storytelling to different audiences. Deloach and Polaha are prime examples of actors who refuse to be pigeonholed. They actively develop projects outside the Hallmark genre, balancing these with roles in Hallmark productions. Deloach, for example, is working on a true-crime series based on the real-life story of Bambi Bennett and a series inspired by the Innocence Project. Her recent project “Our Holiday Story,” premiering November 2, continues to embrace the Hallmark tradition while showcasing her own story development skills.

Polaha, who made his Hallmark debut with “Dater’s Handbook” in 2016, compared Hallmark’s studio system to Old Hollywood’s golden age. He points out that Hallmark’s approach is akin to the fast-paced, low-budget model pioneered by studios like Liberty Bell Pictures and directors like Roger Corman. Hallmark, he says, produces over 100 movies per year with relatively small budgets, relying on skilled, adaptable actors to bring them to life. Now, Polaha is venturing into film directing, with his upcoming movie Mimics, a quirky love story that promises to show his Hallmark fans a new, slightly edgier side of his storytelling.

For actors like Polaha, each Hallmark project is treated with the care and dedication reserved for any high-profile film. “If you like the movies that I do, there’s a lot of sort of quality control that comes along with me saying yes to a job,” he explained. Hallmark movies, with budgets averaging $3.25 million and production cycles as short as 15 days, challenge actors to work efficiently and creatively within constraints—a skill that Polaha honed and now brings to his other film projects.

Hollywood Takes Notice: Streaming Services and Hallmark-Inspired Content

The consistent ratings Hallmark delivers each holiday season have not gone unnoticed in Hollywood. As Deloach pointed out, platforms like Netflix are attempting to recreate Hallmark’s holiday magic. Netflix recently added former Hallmark star Lacey Chabert to their Christmas roster, and many of their seasonal films mimic the heartfelt appeal that Hallmark popularized. Unlike Netflix, however, Hallmark’s success is anchored by familiar, recurring actors who become synonymous with the brand. This loyalty has cemented an audience that follows these actors’ other projects outside of Hallmark, even across genres. Deloach’s and Polaha’s fans, for instance, have shown up for their non-Hallmark films, proving that their appeal extends beyond feel-good holiday tales.

Building Versatile Careers and Expanding Creative Horizons

Both Deloach and Polaha have taken steps to show that Hallmark actors can excel in various roles and projects. For Deloach, part of her mission has been to balance her Hallmark roles with grittier, often more complex projects. She aspires to take on roles in shows like Succession or Veep while continuing to create Hallmark content that brings joy to viewers.

Polaha has been similarly proactive about expanding his career. He co-writes romance novels with the “Coming with Love” series and has directed short films like Work of Art, which premiered at the Filmmaker Showcase in Cannes. Polaha recognizes the importance of stretching creative boundaries, and his latest film Mimics promises to push the envelope for his Hallmark audience by exploring a more unusual story.

With these experiences and the support of a devoted fanbase, Hallmark stars are proving they have the potential for more than just “TV movie” careers. The industry is beginning to acknowledge this, and these actors are laying the groundwork for future Hallmark stars to be viewed as versatile, bankable talents rather than niche performers.

The Future of Hallmark Actors in Hollywood

The success of Hallmark’s actors reflects a shift in how the industry perceives “TV actors.” Deloach, Polaha, and others are increasingly proving that they have the skill, ambition, and audience loyalty to thrive across genres. And while they are proud of their Hallmark work, they also see a future where Hallmark actors are not confined to “safe” roles but are valued for their versatility and talent.

As the line between traditional television and film continues to blur, these actors are rebranding the Hallmark Channel’s stars as forces to be reckoned with in the entertainment world. Whether in a Hallmark movie or a blockbuster feature, their ability to draw in viewers with authentic, heartfelt performances has made them an invaluable asset to Hollywood.

For fans who love feel-good, family-friendly content but also appreciate actors who push creative boundaries, Hallmark stars like Nikki Deloach and Kristoffer Polaha are setting a new standard.
