Ryan Reynolds Lived In Fear Of Paparazzi Drones On "Deadpool & Wolverine"

Ryan Reynolds’ Clever Strategy To Protect Deadpool & Wolverine Spoilers

Ryan Reynolds has always been vocal about his dedication to preserving the surprise and excitement of his films, but the stakes were higher than ever on the set of Deadpool and Wolverine. With a star-studded lineup and some of the most highly anticipated cameos in Marvel history, the fear of spoilers loomed large over the production. Instead of relying on complex diversion tactics, Reynolds and his team adopted a surprisingly simple yet effective strategy to prevent leaks.

The Dread of On-Set Spoilers

During the director’s commentary for the film, Reynolds confessed that the possibility of leaks kept him awake at night. The fear wasn’t baseless. The cast featured major stars like Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Garner, and Dafne Keen, reprising roles that fans had been dreaming about for years. The secrecy was crucial, especially for an epic fight scene in the Ant-Man Arena, where Blade, Gambit, Elektra, and X-23/Laura squared off against Cassandra Nova's minions.

“I was so scared that people would see these characters. Genuinely, it kept me up at night,” Reynolds admitted.

The Anti-Drone Plan

Leaks via aerial drone photography have become a common challenge in the film industry. Instead of resorting to elaborate misdirection with fake scripts or scenes, the Deadpool and Wolverine team came up with a straightforward solution. According to Reynolds, “If anyone saw a drone, we would yell it out, and basically, everyone runs for cover.”

This tactic, though simple, highlighted the production’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the story. Fortunately, the strategy wasn’t needed in practice, but the proactive approach underscored the lengths to which the team was willing to go to keep the film’s secrets safe.

Balancing Realism with Risk

Director Shawn Levy also weighed in, emphasizing the importance of filming on location rather than relying solely on soundstages. “We took the chances of paparazzi and spoilers because if this were all on a soundstage, I promise you this wouldn’t feel as gritty and as real,” he said. The team’s gamble paid off, as the film's authentic feel resonated with audiences worldwide.

A Success in Secrecy

Despite the high-profile nature of the production, most of the film’s surprises were preserved until its theatrical release. While one marketing campaign revealed X-23’s arrival earlier than planned, the integrity of the key cameos remained intact, allowing fans to experience them fresh in theaters.

What’s Next for Deadpool?

Even though Deadpool and Wolverine has concluded its cinema run, Reynolds’ Merc with the Mouth isn’t going anywhere. The actor recently returned in a cheeky Disney+ promo and teased an abandoned scene with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, hinting at Jean Grey’s involvement.

As fans savor the home release of Deadpool and Wolverine on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and Steelbook, Marvel’s expansive universe promises plenty more surprises ahead. Whether it’s a return to the Merc’s antics or the arrival of fresh faces, the MCU’s future remains as unpredictable as ever.
