The Future of "The Penguin": How Matt Reeves’ HBO Hit Could Shape ‘The Batman Part II"

Director Matt Reeves Explores The Penguin Finale

Since the HBO series The Penguin captivated fans with its dark, gritty portrayal of Gotham's underworld, questions have loomed about how it might impact the direction of The Batman Part II. The hit show, which has drawn both critical acclaim and a burgeoning fan base, wraps its intense first season with Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) securing his power in the criminal hierarchy. For director and producer Matt Reeves, the story may be far from over, as he revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Reeves discussed how the show’s unexpected developments could affect future projects, including the eagerly awaited The Batman sequel.

How ‘The Penguin’ Finale Sets Up the Next Chapter in Gotham’s Underworld

The end of The Penguin’s first season sees Oz securing his position but haunted by the personal sacrifices he’s made to get there. A pivotal twist, where Oz chooses to kill his close ally Victor, adds a layer of psychological complexity that could shape his arc in The Batman Part II. Reeves shared that the decision to have Oz turn on Victor wasn’t originally in showrunner Lauren LeFranc’s plan; instead, it evolved during the writing process to reflect Oz’s inner conflict about vulnerability and ambition. This brutal scene has only intensified fans’ curiosity about how Reeves will bring such a complex character back in future storylines.

Reeves noted that the Penguin’s character reflects a deep-seated fear of weakness, which influences every decision he makes. Oz's insecurities and his drive to control Gotham’s crime world add depth to his personality and set up a natural path to his continued presence in Reeves' cinematic Gotham.

Will ‘The Penguin’ Get a Season 2?

With the success of The Penguin, Reeves said HBO might explore options for more storylines within the Gotham crime saga. He mentioned that the series not only delves into Oz’s psyche but also introduces new, compelling characters like Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti. Sofia’s intricate, power-hungry character has garnered significant attention, and her storyline could justify a spinoff. Whether The Penguin returns for a second season or evolves into a separate limited series for Sofia, Reeves assured fans that any future stories will be thoughtfully developed to retain the fresh, intense tone that The Penguin has established.

Reeves pointed out that while the creative team is excited by the idea of expanding Sofia’s role, no official decisions have been made about a second season. Yet the depth and intensity of Milioti's portrayal, combined with her character’s complex relationship with Oz, could make for an enthralling continuation of Gotham's crime saga.

Will Sofia Falcone Appear in ‘The Batman Part II’?

While Reeves remained tight-lipped about Sofia Falcone’s possible appearance in The Batman Part II, he acknowledged that her complex character in The Penguin has opened up new avenues for storytelling. According to Reeves, seeing her character come to life in the dailies often sparked fresh ideas that have carried over into discussions about the film. However, he clarified that the movie’s focus will primarily remain on Batman’s journey and his continued development as a character.

Despite this, Reeves hinted that the success of The Penguin and its strong reception from fans have certainly influenced some choices in The Batman’s sequel. The series has allowed for richer world-building, offering a multi-dimensional view of Gotham that enhances the stakes for Bruce Wayne’s battle against crime.

Colin Farrell’s Perspective on Returning as The Penguin

Colin Farell has said he has signed up for the next two Batman films.

“I signed up for three Batman films, but I didn’t know if I’d be in the second film… what I’m most excited-slash-nervous about in the second film is not what Oz does – or what predicaments he finds himself in, or what moments of success he gets to experience – but what his voice is. How is his personality? It was forming and changing in the limited series, and, by the end of the eight episodes, it’s concretized into something else. There is a degree of almost delusion psychopathy present in the last scene. So how is that taken up in the second film? I was told I have five or six scenes. I don’t have any hopes or any expectations. I’m really an open book, and that’s the way I get excited by s— or not."

Final Thoughts: Where Gotham’s Underworld Goes from Here

With The Penguin setting the stage for a darker, more complex Gotham, Matt Reeves has created an ever-expanding world that goes beyond Batman himself. While it remains to be seen how much of Oz and Sofia’s world will make its way into The Batman Part II, Reeves’ thoughtful storytelling has left plenty of room for speculation and excitement among fans. Reeves has made it clear that each installment in this Gotham saga will continue to bring the grit, drama, and surprises that keep fans enthralled.
