Gaming Giants Hold Sway: Older Titles Dominate Playtime

As new games struggle for attention, classics like Fortnite and GTA continue to captivate gamers worldwide.

The video game industry, often seen as a realm of constant innovation and new experiences, surprisingly continues to be dominated by older titles. According to a comprehensive 2023 report by market research firm Newzoo, a significant portion of gaming playtime is dedicated to games that are six years old or older, with giants such as Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, and Roblox leading the charge.

Industry Growth Amidst Declining Diversity in Gameplay

The Newzoo report unveiled that the PC and console gaming market experienced a modest revenue growth of 2.6%, reaching a total of $93.5 billion in 2023. However, this financial success masks a less encouraging trend: a majority of the gaming hours are spent within a narrow selection of games. Notably, 60% of all playtime was allocated to games that have been on the market for over six years.

The Undisputed Champions of the Gaming World

Fortnite emerged as the most played game across various platforms, including Switch and PC. The lists of top games on each platform, which rank titles by their average number of monthly active users (MAU), feature other familiar names like Minecraft, Counter-Strike 2, and Apex Legends. Remarkably, in the console domain, only Starfield, a single-player game, managed to break into the top ten, surrounded by multiplayer and live-service games.

The Struggle for New Titles to Gain Traction

Despite the influx of new games, their impact remains minimal. The report highlights a worrying trend: only 23% of gaming time in 2023 was spent on new releases (games younger than two years), and more than half of this was dedicated to sequels of well-established franchises such as Madden and NBA. Independent and innovative new titles only captured a mere 8% of the total gaming hours.

The Evergreen Appeal of Legacy Games

The enduring popularity of older games underscores the shift towards live-service models, where games are continuously updated and expanded, keeping their player base engaged for years. These games offer expansive worlds and robust content pipelines that new titles struggle to compete with. This shift has major implications for game developers and publishers who face the daunting task of attracting players in a market saturated with well-loved, established franchises.

Conclusion: The Challenging Road Ahead for New Games

As the video game landscape continues to evolve, the dominance of older, well-established titles poses a significant challenge for new entrants in the industry. According to Newzoo, "It will be increasingly challenging to grow a game's playerbase," especially in a market where perennial favorites are the preference. The report suggests that success may increasingly depend on a game's ability to fit into the live-service model or join the ranks of annual blockbuster franchises.
