Ravens Attack Google’s Delivery Drones in Canberra

Google's pioneering drone delivery service faces an unexpected challenge from local wildlife, leading to temporary suspension of operations.

Google Wing, which launched the world’s first commercial drone delivery service in Canberra, Australia, in 2019, has recently faced aerial opposition from territorial ravens. The drone service, designed to deliver food, coffee, and medicines to residents, has seen an increase in activity during the local COVID-19 lockdowns, coinciding with the birds’ nesting season.

Avian Interference

The increase in drone flights has seemingly provoked local ravens into defending their territory, leading to several instances where the birds have aggressively swooped at the drones. This behavior prompted Wing to pause its delivery operations in certain areas to consult with ornithological experts. The aim is to ensure that their service operations do not harm the local bird population.

Community Impact and Response

Residents like Ben Roberts, who have benefited from the convenience of drone deliveries during the pandemic, support the pause in service. Roberts, having witnessed an attack while receiving a coffee delivery, highlighted the importance of safety for both the birds and the community.

Broader Context

This is not the first time birds have interfered with drone operations. Similar incidents have occurred globally, leading to creative solutions like training eagles to intercept drones, though these programs have faced their own challenges and complexities.

Looking Ahead

Google Wing's commitment to minimizing its environmental impact reflects a growing need for technology companies to consider wildlife conservation in their operational plans. As drone delivery services expand, ensuring harmony between technological advances and natural habitats will be crucial.
