Netflix CEO Believes "Barbenheimer" Could Have Been Just As Big On Streaming

Ted Sarandos Shares His Confidence in Netflix's Potential

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently made headlines with his bold claim that the massive success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" could have been replicated on the streaming platform. According to Sarandos, the phenomenon known as "Barbenheimer" – the cultural event where both films released simultaneously and drew significant audiences to theaters – would have been just as impactful had it occurred on Netflix.

The Success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer"

"Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, was a box office sensation, grossing over $1 billion globally. On the other hand, Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" not only captivated audiences but also swept the 2024 Oscars, cementing its status as a critical and commercial success.
Sarandos' Vision for Streaming Success

In an interview with The New York Times, Sarandos expressed his belief in the versatility and reach of Netflix's platform. "Both of those movies would be great for Netflix," he stated. "They definitely would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix. And so I don't think there's any reason to believe that certain kinds of movies do or don't work."

Sarandos went on to challenge the notion that the size of the screen impacts a movie's success or viewer satisfaction. Citing a personal anecdote, he mentioned his 28-year-old son, who is an editor, enjoying the classic film "Lawrence of Arabia" on his phone. "There's no reason to believe that the movie itself is better in any size of screen for all people," Sarandos added.

The "Barbenheimer" Phenomenon

The simultaneous release of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" created an unexpected double feature that captivated moviegoers, turning the event into a cultural phenomenon. Many fans made a point to watch both films back-to-back in theaters, contributing to their monumental box office success. Sarandos acknowledged the unique nature of this event but remained confident that the same level of excitement and viewership could be achieved on a streaming platform like Netflix.

The Impact of Streaming Technology

Sarandos highlighted the role of technological advancements in enhancing the viewer experience. He pointed out that each technological development has brought new opportunities and wins for audiences, suggesting that streaming services can deliver the same, if not better, experiences as traditional cinema. "But it is just an interesting thing. At every new development of technology, there's wins for the audience," he remarked.

Netflix's Busy Release Slate

As Netflix continues to expand its content library, the platform remains a dominant force in the entertainment industry. The remainder of the year promises an array of highly anticipated releases, including "Squid Game" season 2, the rest of "Bridgerton" season 3, and two out of three parts of "Cobra Kai" season 6. These releases are expected to draw significant viewership and further solidify Netflix's position as a premier streaming service.

Conclusion: Streaming's Future Potential

Ted Sarandos' comments underscore the growing potential of streaming platforms to replicate and even surpass the success of traditional cinema releases. While the "Barbenheimer" event may have been unique to theaters, Sarandos believes that the right content, combined with the accessibility and convenience of streaming, can achieve similar cultural impact and viewer engagement.
