Reopened Video Portal Connects New York City And Dublin With New Rules

The infamous video portal connecting New York City and Dublin in real-time has reopened, introducing new measures to curb inappropriate behavior.

Real-Time Connection Between Cities

The video portal, featuring a large circular screen displaying real-time video from a second location, is situated in the heart of New York and Dublin. Although not a physical portal, it gives the illusion of stepping through to the other city. The art installation, designed by Portals.org founder Benediktas Gylys, aims to foster global interconnectedness. "Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is - united and one," Gylys explains. The livestream allows individuals to connect beyond social circles and cultural boundaries, promoting a sense of global unity.

Incidents Leading to Temporary Closure

Despite its noble intentions, the portal faced issues leading to a temporary shutdown. Incidents of inappropriate behavior, such as showing distressing images of the 9/11 attacks, flashing body parts, alleged drug use, and trolling, marred the experience. Notably, an OnlyFans model in New York went viral for flashing the camera, gaining financial benefits from the stunt.

New Measures for Improved Conduct

Following these incidents, the Dublin City Council closed the portal on May 14th. However, the portal has since reopened with new measures to ensure proper conduct. Organizers have implemented a 'proximity-based solution' to prevent individuals from stepping too close to the screens or holding phones up to the cameras. This triggers a blurring effect on both sides of the livestream. Additionally, fencing and spacing decals have been added to the New York portal to maintain order.

Gylys emphasized community responsibility in a statement on May 19th: "As humans, we are creating the Portals experience together. I invite local communities not only to enjoy but to care about their Portals and how other community members are approaching the sculptures."

Public Reception and Locations

The portal in New York is located at the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street, one of the city's busiest intersections. The Dublin portal can be found at the junction between O'Connell Street and North Earl Street.

John Plummer, a visitor from Drogheda in County Louth, shared his positive experience with the BBC: "It's amazing. It's great to see something like this in the city and to be able to watch people going about their business in New York while we're standing here in the center of Dublin."

As the video portal reopens, it serves as a reminder of the potential for global connection and the importance of respectful interaction. Visitors are encouraged to adhere to the new guidelines to ensure a positive experience for everyone. For those planning to visit, remember to be on your best behavior and enjoy this unique opportunity to connect with others across the globe.
