Amazon Games’ Ambitious Strategy To Dominate The Triple-A Gaming Market

From 'Tomb Raider' To 'The Lord of the Rings,' Amazon Games' Path To Becoming a Top Publisher

Amazon Games has been operating under the radar for the past few years. While competitors like Netflix have been aggressively marketing their gaming ventures, Amazon has taken a different approach. Under the leadership of Christoph Hartmann, the co-founder of 2K, Amazon Games is now poised to make a significant impact in the gaming industry with a slew of Triple-A titles.

The Long Game: Building Quality Over Quantity

Christoph Hartmann, who joined Amazon Games as vice president in 2018, emphasizes that quality takes time. “The approach we took at Amazon is the long game,” Hartmann explained. Rather than acquiring numerous studios, Amazon has focused on developing both internal and selective external games. This strategy has culminated in eight games currently in development, with a goal to release two to three high-quality games annually.

This method contrasts sharply with the more aggressive acquisition strategies seen elsewhere in the industry. Hartmann points out that while studio acquisitions can sometimes be successful, many acquisitions fail to deliver the expected results. By focusing on in-house development and carefully chosen partnerships, Amazon Games aims to maintain a high standard of quality.

Upcoming Releases: 'Throne and Liberty' and 'New World: Aeternum'

Amazon Games is preparing for the release of two major titles in the coming months. The free-to-play MMORPG "Throne and Liberty" is set for a September release, followed by the action RPG "New World: Aeternum" in October. Both games will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S consoles. These releases mark a significant step forward for Amazon Games, showcasing their commitment to delivering top-tier gaming experiences.

Transmedia Strategy: Leveraging Amazon’s Ecosystem

Amazon’s approach to gaming is deeply integrated with its broader entertainment ecosystem. Joost van Dreunen, a professor at NYU Stern School of Business, notes that Amazon's transmedia strategy could be pivotal to its success. By developing games that complement its other entertainment offerings, such as Prime Video, Amazon can create a cohesive and immersive experience for users.

Hartmann highlights the potential of transmedia projects, pointing to the success of the "Fallout" TV series as an example. While Microsoft’s Bethesda Game Studio benefited from the increased game sales, Amazon's ability to create and leverage its own IP could yield similar success. For instance, the upcoming "Tomb Raider" game and show are expected to enhance each other, despite not being directly linked.

Focus on Triple-A Titles and Innovation

While Amazon has dabbled in various genres, their primary focus remains on Triple-A titles. Hartmann believes that the mobile gaming market is oversaturated and difficult to penetrate, making Triple-A games a more strategic choice. His background with Take-Two and 2K has equipped him with the expertise to steer Amazon Games toward producing high-quality console and PC games.

Amazon Games is also committed to innovation and new IPs. Hartmann stresses the importance of not becoming complacent with successful franchises. By continually investing in new ideas and IPs, Amazon Games aims to stay ahead in an industry that values creativity and originality.

The Role of AI in Gaming’s Future

Hartmann envisions AI playing a transformative role in the gaming industry. Unlike other entertainment forms, games offer significant potential for AI-driven customization and personalization. For instance, AI could help train new players, making complex games more accessible and enjoyable. Amazon is well-positioned to leverage AI, given its extensive resources and expertise in technology.

Hiring and Expansion Amid Industry Layoffs

While many gaming companies are facing layoffs, Amazon Games is expanding. They have opened a new studio in Bucharest and are continuing to grow their Montreal studio. Hartmann views the current industry downturn as an opportunity to attract top talent. By investing in their workforce, Amazon Games is positioning itself for long-term success.

Amazon Games is on a mission to become a leading game publisher by focusing on quality, leveraging its entertainment ecosystem, and embracing innovation. With the upcoming releases of "Throne and Liberty" and "New World: Aeternum," and a promising pipeline of Triple-A titles, Amazon Games is set to make a significant mark in the gaming industry.
