Disney Unveils Thrilling ‘Alien: Romulus’ Footage, Teases Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts,’ And Boosts ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ At CineEurope

Disney captured the spotlight at the CineEurope trade show in Barcelona with an exciting slate of upcoming films, capitalizing on the triumphant success of its latest release, “Inside Out 2.” Riding high on record-breaking box office numbers, Disney’s presentation was filled with thrilling previews and star-studded appearances, showcasing its diverse and ambitious upcoming projects.

A Record-Breaking Success

“Inside Out 2” has taken the global box office by storm, raking in an impressive $295 million during its opening weekend. This feat makes it the biggest opening of the year, the highest ever for an animated movie worldwide, and the most significant animated opening internationally with $140.8 million. As of Tuesday, the total has surged to $380 million, providing a much-needed boost to cinemas after a series of underperforming releases this year.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Takes Center Stage

The presentation took an exhilarating turn with the spotlight on “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the highly anticipated third installment in the R-rated Deadpool franchise. Set for release on July 26, the extended scene featured Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson living a quiet life among friends, including the beloved character Peter, played by Rob Delaney. Reynolds, in full Deadpool costume, sent a humorous message to the audience, introducing Disney’s head of global theatrical distribution, Tony Chambers, as “Tony Bloody Chambers.” Adding to the excitement, original costumes from the film were displayed, and Reynolds' Aviation Gin was served with a playful nod to the “Deadpool Ginematic Universe.”

‘Alien: Romulus’ Brings Back Horror

Fans of the iconic Alien franchise were treated to an exclusive look at “Alien: Romulus,” directed by Fede Álvarez. The film, scheduled for release on August 16, aims to return to the series' horror roots. Álvarez introduced extended footage, emphasizing the film's dedication to the terrifying essence that defined the early days of the franchise.

Exciting Releases on the Horizon

Disney’s upcoming lineup also includes “Moana 2,” set for release on November 29. The presentation featured a lively performance by a troupe of dancers and a preview of one of the songs from the animated sequel. Barry Jenkins, appearing via video, shared his enthusiasm for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the prequel to the 2019 hit, featuring the voices of Beyoncé and her daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

Looking ahead to 2025, Disney showcased an exclusive behind-the-scenes video from the recently wrapped Marvel film “Thunderbolts,” starring Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan. Additionally, an early look at “The Amateur,” starring Rami Malek, was provided, highlighting Malek’s character who forces the CIA to train him to seek revenge for his wife’s death.

More to Come from Disney’s Searchlight and Beyond

Brendan Fraser sent a special message from Japan, where he recently completed filming “Rental Family.” The comedy-drama marks Fraser’s first project since his Oscar win for “The Whale” and sees him portraying a struggling actor hired as a token American for a Japanese rental family company.

The presentation also included sneak peeks from the live-action adaptation of “Snow White,” featuring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the evil queen. These previews, alongside the highly anticipated new footage from various franchises, indicate that Disney is set to dominate the box office in the coming months.

A Promising Future

Disney’s presentation at CineEurope 2024 highlighted a robust and diverse slate of upcoming films, promising thrilling experiences for audiences worldwide. From horror to animation, superhero sagas to heartfelt dramas, Disney continues to push the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. As the anticipation builds for these releases, Disney remains at the forefront of the entertainment industry, captivating audiences and setting new standards for box office success.
