John Mayer On The Making Of Dead & Company’s Mind-Bending Sphere Las Vegas Residency

'I Love That Adults Are Having Childlike, Wondrous Experiences at This Show'

John Mayer, guitarist and co-founder of Dead & Company, is urging fans not to miss the band’s mind-bending residency at Las Vegas' Sphere. With only a month and a half left, Mayer speaks passionately about the urgency of experiencing this unique audiovisual extravaganza. In an exclusive interview with Variety, Mayer delves into the meticulous planning and innovative execution behind the residency, offering a glimpse into what makes this concert series an unmissable event.

From Idea to Reality

The concept of Dead & Company’s Sphere residency was born out of “chatter,” as Mayer puts it. After seeing U2’s shows at the Sphere, Mayer was inspired by the possibilities for an immersive audiovisual experience. The planning, which began in earnest in December, quickly transitioned from a concept to a concrete plan by January. Despite the compressed timeline and limited budget compared to U2, Mayer was undeterred, embracing the challenge with enthusiasm.

A Unique A/V Experience

For Mayer, the residency was more than just a chance to reunite with his bandmates; it was an opportunity to expand the Grateful Dead canon through cutting-edge visuals. The Grateful Dead has always prioritized lighting and visual storytelling, and the Sphere’s capabilities provided a perfect playground for this creative exploration. Mayer emphasizes that had the technology been available in the past, the Grateful Dead would have likely embraced it.

Collaborative Creativity

Mayer took on the role of point man for the project, leveraging his proximity to the Sphere studio in Burbank and his drive to bring the vision to life. His concept for the show involved a narrative wraparound that created a cinematic experience, allowing the band to explore different times and spaces. This modular approach enabled flexibility and creativity, with band members like Bob Weir and Mickey Hart contributing their insights and memories to shape the visuals.

Immersive Environments

One of the standout features of the show is its ability to transport audiences through time and space. From modern-day Haight Ashbury to the 1970s, the visual narrative takes concert-goers on a metaphysical journey. Notable sequences include the Grateful Dead’s historic performance in Egypt, brought to life with precise lighting and environmental details, and a recreation of Cornell University Fieldhouse, which left audiences awestruck with its realistic illusion.

Balancing Act

Creating the setlist for each show involves a complex balancing act, considering both the musical flow and the visual content. The team aims to avoid overwhelming the audience with constant visual stimuli, incorporating moments of tension and release. This intricate dance requires daily adjustments and collaboration, ensuring that each performance remains unique and engaging.

Audience Reactions

Mayer relishes the audience’s childlike, wondrous reactions to the show. The Sphere’s immersive environment evokes a sense of awe and excitement reminiscent of a theme park ride. Watching videos of audience reactions on social media, Mayer finds joy in seeing people’s genuine amazement and believes that these experiences are rare for adults.

Looking Forward

While the future of Dead & Company at the Sphere remains uncertain, Mayer is open to the possibility of returning. For now, he wants as many people as possible to experience the residency before it ends. The show is designed to cater to both hardcore fans and newcomers, making it accessible and enjoyable for all.  Dead & Company’s residency at the Sphere is a groundbreaking fusion of music and visual art, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for concert-goers. As the residency draws to a close, Mayer’s message is clear: don’t miss the chance to be part of this extraordinary journey.
