The Resurgence Of The 'Fallout' Franchise

Todd Howard Discusses Success and Future Plans

The popularity of Amazon’s "Fallout" TV series has significantly boosted the "Fallout" video game franchise, especially revitalizing the 2018 multiplayer game "Fallout 76." Initially released to poor reviews, "Fallout 76" struggled to find its footing. However, with time and the recent success of the TV series, the game's player base has surged dramatically.

Bethesda, the developer behind the "Fallout" series, reported that "Fallout 76" has crossed 20 million downloads and plays as of Wednesday, up from 17 million in December. This resurgence is largely attributed to the TV show's popularity, which premiered two months ago. Todd Howard, the director and executive producer overseeing the "Fallout" franchise, discussed this success in a recent interview with Variety. Howard highlighted that daily active users across the franchise have increased by over 600%, now exceeding 5 million players:

"Depending on the ‘Fallout’ game, you’re looking at a 4-6x increase in daily players, which is beyond anything I’ve ever seen in my 30 years of doing this. Having an event that brings that many people into games that you have and who have never played your games before, that’s a big thing. New players who have never played a game or never played one of our games. It’s a really, really unique moment." Howard, who also serves as an executive producer on the TV series, confirmed that the show’s second season will continue to follow the characters from the first season, avoiding an anthology format. He also hinted at the development of more games in the series, though specific details are still under wraps:

"The TV show, I feel like it took us 15 years from when I first started talking about it – but it was five years since Jonah [Nolan] and I first talked. And games take a good five-ish years. So we’re in plans for future games in this series, and nothing to talk about right now, but we’re always planning." Amazon Prime Video reported that the "Fallout" TV series attracted 65 million viewers within its first sixteen days of availability, making it the second most-watched title on the platform. This success is only surpassed by "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," which debuted in 2022. The synergy between the TV series and the video games has created a resurgence for the "Fallout" franchise, promising an exciting future for both the fans and the developers.
