Batman: Arkham Asylum TV Series Shelved At Max

The anticipated Arkham Asylum TV series will not be moving forward at Max, Variety has confirmed.

As reported exclusively by Variety in October 2022, Antonio Campos was set to serve as the writer and showrunner for the series, which was intended to be a part of Matt Reeves' "The Batman" universe. However, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, Campos' iteration of the series will not proceed. Despite this setback, the possibility remains for a new project centered around Gotham City's notorious asylum in the future.

This news marks another twist in the long and complicated journey of the show's development. Initially announced in July 2020, the series was first envisioned to explore the inner workings of the Gotham Police Department as depicted in "The Batman." Terrence Winter was originally attached to write and executive produce, but he departed the project in November 2020 due to creative differences. Subsequently, "Giri/Haji" creator Joe Barton was brought on board to write, but Warner Bros. eventually parted ways with him as well.

In 2022, Matt Reeves mentioned in an interview that the Gotham PD show had evolved into what would become the Arkham Asylum series, describing it as akin to a "horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham." Antonio Campos joined as showrunner, only for the series to face further uncertainty with the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who were appointed to lead DC Studios and reboot its film and television universe. In December 2023, Gunn confirmed through social media that the Arkham Asylum show was still in development and would be part of the new DCU, distinct from "The Batman" universe.

Despite the cancellation of the Arkham Asylum series, the world built by Matt Reeves in "The Batman" continues to expand. "The Penguin," a crime drama series featuring Colin Farrell reprising his role as the titular villain, is set to premiere on Max in September. Additionally, Reeves is developing "The Batman Part II," though the film's release has been delayed from October 2025 to October 2026.

Meanwhile, James Gunn and Peter Safran are making significant strides in relaunching DC's interconnected film and TV universe. Production is underway on a new Superman film starring David Corenswet, with several other projects in the pipeline. Additionally, a Green Lantern TV series has been greenlit and will be branded as an HBO original, following a new content delineation between HBO and Max outlined by HBO & Max chief Casey Bloys in June.

While the cancellation of the Arkham Asylum TV series at Max is disappointing for fans, the continued development of other projects within the DC universe offers new avenues for exploration and storytelling. Whether through the gritty streets of Gotham in "The Penguin" or the broader canvas of the DCU under Gunn and Safran's leadership, there remains much to anticipate in the world of DC entertainment.
