Elon Musk's X: Say Goodbye To Buttons And Hello To Swipes

Musk is once again making headlines with his latest overhaul of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

This time, he's removing the familiar repost, like, and reply buttons from users' feeds, aiming to transform how interactions occur on the social media giant. Let's dive into what these changes entail and how users are reacting.

A New Way to Interact: Swiping Instead of Tapping

In a significant redesign, X is eliminating the repost, like, and reply buttons from individual posts in users' timelines. Instead of tapping on these buttons, users will now need to swipe left or right on a post to interact with it. Specifically, a left swipe will like a post, while a right swipe will enable a reply. For iOS users, a force touch on a post will open a menu with additional options.

Additionally, the counts for reposts, likes, and replies will also disappear from the posts. The only metric that will remain visible in the timeline is the view count, which has been relocated to the upper right-hand corner of the post.

Why the Change?

This move aligns with Musk's long-standing desire to simplify interactions on the platform. Since acquiring the company in October 2022, Musk has been on a mission to make sweeping changes, with one of the most notable being rebranding Twitter to X. He believes that this redesign will streamline user experience by focusing on content rather than engagement metrics.

Mixed Reactions from Users

The reaction to this announcement has been overwhelmingly negative. Users have voiced their dissatisfaction, with many criticizing the change. Despite this, Musk remains optimistic and even responded to critics by stating, "Just swipe left to like and right to reply."

This is not the first controversial change Musk has implemented. Last month, he made "likes" private, so only the post's author could see who liked their post. Previously, anyone could view the list of users who liked a post. This change was met with a similar backlash.

Musk's Track Record of Reversals

Elon Musk has shown in the past that he's willing to reverse unpopular decisions. For instance, when he decided to remove headlines from article links in posts last year, the criticism was so intense that headlines were reinstated within two months, albeit with a slightly different design.

Given this history, it's possible that if the removal of the repost and like buttons proves too unpopular, they might be brought back. In fact, Musk himself hinted at this possibility in a subscriber-only post last October, stating that the company would consider reverting the changes if they didn’t work out.

The Future of X

As with any major redesign, there is always the risk of alienating users. However, Musk seems committed to his vision for X and believes that these changes will ultimately benefit the platform. Whether users will adapt to these new interaction methods or if X will have to backtrack on these changes remains to be seen.

For now, users will need to get accustomed to swiping for interactions and relying on view counts as the primary engagement metric. As the changes roll out, it will be interesting to observe how this impacts user engagement and the overall user experience on X.
