Mark Zuckerberg Teases Groundbreaking AR Glasses

"Most Advanced Piece Of Technology On The Planet"

Facebook co-founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is on the brink of unveiling what he describes as the "most advanced piece of technology on the planet" in the realm of augmented reality (AR). This revolutionary product, referred to as "full holographic" glasses, has been in development as part of Meta’s ambitious Orion project.

A Sneak Peek into the Future of AR

In a recent interview with YouTuber Kane Sutter, known online as Kallaway, Zuckerberg shared his excitement about the upcoming AR glasses. “Every person who I've shown it to so far, their reaction is giddy. I'm really looking forward to showing that to more people,” he revealed. The anticipation is high, with Business Insider reporting that the technology will soon be demonstrated.

The Orion Project: Meta's Vision for AR

Meta's annual Connect conference previously hinted at the development of these AR glasses, internally referred to as Orion. Unlike current AR offerings, Zuckerberg’s vision for this technology goes beyond mere headsets. The AR glasses are designed to be unmistakably glasses, albeit with thicker frames to house the sophisticated AR components.

Focus on Consumer-Friendly Design

Zuckerberg emphasized that the current focus is on perfecting a consumer-friendly version rather than rushing to market with a prototype. “We're focused on building the full consumer version of it rather than selling the prototype,” he stated. While the prototype might not be the most stylish, it represents a significant leap in AR technology.

Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer and head of Reality Labs, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the upcoming AR glasses might indeed be “the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain.”

Meta’s Current AR Ventures

Currently, Meta sells Meta Ray-Bans, which come equipped with cameras and integrated AI but lack a display. This product has already demonstrated Meta’s commitment to blending everyday wearables with advanced technology. Zuckerberg mentioned that AI advancements have paved the way for simpler yet highly appealing products, reducing the immediate need for full holographic displays.

The Road Ahead

Zuckerberg acknowledged that while the AR glasses may not be available for purchase in the near future, the groundwork being laid now is crucial for their eventual success. “I would have thought previously that we needed the full holograms for presence. But AI has made such big leaps that I think […] even something that's a simpler product will have more appeal sooner,” he explained. He also cautioned that it would take a few years before these products start showing meaningful returns.

As Meta continues to push the boundaries of AR technology, the anticipation surrounding their upcoming AR glasses grows. With promises of unmatched technological advancement, Zuckerberg’s latest project could redefine how we interact with augmented reality.
