The Man Who Spent The Longest Time In The Quietest Room In The World

Breaking Records In The World’s Quietest Room

In a world filled with constant noise, the idea of absolute silence can seem both appealing and daunting. For many, a moment of peace and quiet is a luxury, but there are places where silence reaches an almost unnerving level. One such place is the anechoic chamber at South Bank University in London, which holds the title of the quietest place on Earth. Here, YouTuber and musician Callux embarked on a challenge that pushed the boundaries of human endurance and sanity, spending the longest recorded time in this soundless environment.

What is an Anechoic Chamber?

An anechoic chamber is a room designed to completely absorb sound reflections, creating an environment devoid of echo and external noise. It is so well insulated that the sound level is measured in negative decibels. The chamber at South Bank University, designed by scientist Steven Orfield, is an extraordinary feat of acoustic engineering. In such a space, even the sound of a balloon popping barely registers. Visitors are usually advised to spend no more than 45 minutes inside due to the intense sensory deprivation experienced.

Orfield explains, "We challenge people to sit in the chamber in the dark. When it's quiet, ears will adapt. The quieter the room, the more things you hear. You'll hear your heart beating, sometimes you can hear your lungs, hear your stomach gurgling loudly. In the anechoic chamber, you become the sound."

The Challenge

Callux, a popular YouTuber known for taking on extreme challenges, decided to push his limits by spending an extended period in the anechoic chamber. His goal was to break the previous record of 67 minutes. To ensure the challenge was legitimate, several strict rules were put in place:

The challenger must be alone in the chamber.

No sleeping or fainting is allowed.

The challenger must be monitored and remain under constant supervision.

Sound levels must stay below 25 decibels.

The challenger can speak for up to one minute every five minutes.

The challenger is permitted to leave at any time.

Optionally, the challenge could be completed in the dark.

The Experience

From the moment he entered the chamber, Callux faced the overwhelming silence. Just five minutes in, he felt disoriented and experienced intense tinnitus. After 15 minutes, he began to see lights dancing around him—a common hallucination in sensory deprivation. As the minutes ticked by, the silence became almost unbearable. After half an hour, Callux reported hearing his blood flow, a surreal and unnerving sensation.

Approaching the one-hour mark, Callux contemplated giving up. The hallucinations grew more vivid, and the silence pressed down on him like a physical weight. Despite the extreme discomfort, he persevered, pushing through the psychological barriers. Ultimately, he shattered the previous record, spending an astonishing one hour and 26 minutes in the chamber.

Reflecting on his experience, Callux succinctly summed it up: "That was f**king weird."

The Psychological Impact

The anechoic chamber challenge highlighted the profound impact of sensory deprivation on the human mind. In an environment where external stimuli are almost entirely absent, the brain begins to create its own sensations. This can lead to auditory and visual hallucinations, disorientation, and even feelings of panic. The experience underscores the delicate balance of sensory input that our brains require to function normally.

Callux's achievement in the anechoic chamber is a testament to human endurance and the power of the mind. His record-setting feat provides a fascinating glimpse into the effects of extreme silence on the human psyche. For those curious about pushing their limits or simply fascinated by the concept of absolute silence, the anechoic chamber at South Bank University offers an unparalleled, if somewhat unsettling, experience.
