Kit Harington Reflects On The Rushed Ending Of "Game of Thrones" And Why the Snow Spinoff Didn't Happen

The Jon Snow Actor Shares His Thoughts On The Controversial Final Season And The Challenges Of Continuing The Iconic Series.

Kit Harington, best known for his role as Jon Snow in HBO's Game of Thrones, recently opened up about the much-debated final season of the series. In a candid interview with GQ, Harington acknowledged that "mistakes were made" during the creation of the last season, which has been widely criticized by fans and critics alike for its perceived rushed storytelling and unsatisfactory conclusion.

Reflecting on the whirlwind that was the final season, Harington admitted that exhaustion played a significant role in how the season was executed. "I think if there was any fault with the end of Thrones, it's that we were all so fucking tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer," Harington confessed. The actor explained that by the time the cast and crew reached the final episodes, they were physically and emotionally drained, which may have contributed to the perceived haste in wrapping up the complex storylines that had been developed over the course of eight seasons.

Harington acknowledged the critiques of the show's ending, particularly the backlash against certain story choices that left many fans dissatisfied. "Everyone is entitled to their opinion," he said, adding that while there were "interesting choices" made towards the end, not all of them landed as intended. The actor expressed a level of agreement with those who felt the series finale was rushed but emphasized that there might not have been a viable alternative given the circumstances.

In addition to discussing the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Harington also shed light on the shelved spinoff series, Snow, which was in development for some time. The project, which would have focused on Jon Snow's life after the events of Game of Thrones, ultimately did not come to fruition. Harington revealed that it was HBO who initially approached him with the idea, but his initial reaction was one of hesitation. "My first reaction was 'no,'" he recalled, though he later reconsidered, thinking there might be an "interesting and important story about the soldier after the war."

Despite spending several years developing the project, Harington and the team behind Snow eventually decided not to move forward with it. "Nothing got us excited enough," Harington explained. He voiced concerns that continuing to develop the spinoff could result in a product that didn’t meet the high standards set by the original series. "I think if we push this any further and keep developing it, we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want."

Harington also touched on the importance of stepping away from his iconic role as Jon Snow to avoid being typecast. "It’s kind of essential to do my job, for people to come and see me and not see Jon Snow," he said, highlighting his desire to explore different characters and projects as he continues his acting career.

As Harington moves on to new endeavors, such as his recent role in HBO's finance drama Industry, the legacy of Game of Thrones continues to spark conversation. Meanwhile, House of the Dragon, another spinoff from the Game of Thrones universe, has successfully wrapped its second season, showing that while the original series may have ended on a divisive note, the world of Westeros still has stories left to tell.
