Luminate Streaming Ratings: ‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ Leads Amid Slow TV Viewership

Despite a sluggish summer for streaming, Netflix’s latest hit ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ claims the top spot with a strong debut.

In the world of streaming, summer 2024 has been marked by a noticeable slowdown in viewership, but there are still a few standout successes. According to Luminate’s weekly viewership rankings for August 2-8, Netflix’s “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” emerged as the most-watched streaming original, racking up an impressive 699.1 million minutes in its first full week of availability. This remarkable performance outpaced all other titles across both TV and film during this period, solidifying the show’s position as a summer breakout.

A Summer Slowdown in Streaming

The summer months often see a dip in television viewership, and this year has been no exception. Prior to the debut of “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” the highest-ranking title was the sixth season of “Love Island USA,” which garnered 386.5 million minutes watched from July 26 to August 1. As the summer progressed, the slowdown persisted, but “Love Island USA” continued to perform well, securing the No. 2 spot on the chart for the week of August 2-8 with 365.9 million minutes watched.

Top TV Performers of the Week

Following the debut of “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” other notable series included “Unsolved Mysteries” Season 4, which claimed the No. 3 position with 318.2 million minutes watched in its first full week. Meanwhile, the third season of “Mayor of Kingstown” also made a strong showing, capturing 284.2 million minutes watched during the same period, likely buoyed by the release of its season finale.

Other series that made it into the top ten included Season 6 of “Too Hot to Handle” in fifth place with 210.7 million minutes, and “Presumed Innocent” in sixth with 210 million minutes. The lower end of the chart was occupied by titles that attracted fewer than 200 million minutes, such as “Love of My Life,” “Batman: Caped Crusader,” “Criminal Minds,” and “Cobra Kai.”

Film Chart Highlights

While television viewership struggled to reach pre-summer heights, the film chart saw a mix of debuts and returning favorites. Leading the pack was “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” set in the beloved “SpongeBob” universe, which debuted with 325.9 million minutes watched. This was more than double the viewership of the next film on the list, “Find Me Falling,” which accumulated 148.1 million minutes watched in its third week.

Interestingly, both installments of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” franchise made their way back into the chart’s top positions, thanks in part to the release of directors’ cuts that reignited interest in the films. These director’s cuts claimed the third and fourth spots on the film chart, further demonstrating Netflix’s ability to draw viewers back to previously released content with strategic updates.

The Road Ahead for Streaming

The performance of “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” and other top-ranking shows highlights the enduring power of fresh, compelling content even during slower periods of the year. As streaming platforms continue to compete for viewer attention in an increasingly crowded market, the ability to launch hits that resonate with audiences is more crucial than ever.

While the summer slowdown has been evident, the success of these series and films suggests that viewers are still hungry for quality content. As we move into the fall, it will be interesting to see how the streaming landscape evolves and which new titles will capture the attention of global audiences.
