The Emergence of AI-Generated Headshots: A Threat To Photographers?

Will ‘Professional’ AI Headshots Make Photographers Worry?

In a world where technology continuously evolves, AI-generated headshots have become a reality. For a mere $10, tech companies offer hundreds of "professional" images. This development poses a significant question: should photographers be concerned about their livelihood?

How AI Headshots Work

The process is straightforward. Users upload ten photographs of themselves to a website, such as PhotoPacks.AI, and wait about an hour to receive their AI-generated images. PhotoPacks emphasizes the importance of high-quality, high-resolution photos with various angles, clothing, and expressions to ensure better output from their AI model, which is based on Stable Diffusion’s SDXL.

The AI Headshot Experience

Seeing AI-generated images of oneself can be a surreal experience. Posting these images on social media elicits mixed reactions. Strangers often find the results impressive, with some even declaring traditional headshot photography as obsolete. In contrast, those who know the subject personally often find the images unsettling due to their "uncanny valley" effect, where the AI-generated faces resemble the person but don't look entirely right.

The Public's Reaction

Friends and family typically describe the images as “It’s you, but it’s not you.” This reaction underscores the current limitations of AI in perfectly replicating human likeness, despite the technology's impressive capabilities.

The Business of AI Headshots

Jeremy Gustine, the founder of PhotoPacks, notes significant interest from people seeking LinkedIn photos, website images, and social media profile pictures. The primary audience tends to be younger individuals (ages 20-40) looking for a more affordable and convenient alternative to professional headshots. Gustine acknowledges the novelty and utility of AI-generated images, predicting that the technology could eventually replace professional photographers if it continues to improve.

Ethical Considerations and Future Implications

Using AI images in professional settings raises ethical concerns. Gustine compares the use of AI to enhance images to using Photoshop but recognizes potential misuse, such as misleading representations. He believes that as long as people are honest about the source of their photos, the technology will gain acceptance. The future might see AI headshots becoming commonplace, much like other photo-editing tools today.

Personal Verdict: Will I Use AI Headshots?

Despite the novelty, I won’t be using AI headshots for professional purposes. The AI-generated images, while impressive, still have noticeable flaws like unnatural hands and asymmetrical reflections. Additionally, the technology faces legal challenges, such as the lawsuit against Stable Diffusion for allegedly using over 12 million copyrighted photos without permission.

The Uncertain Future of AI in Photography

In 2024, AI in photography is at a crossroads, with rapid advancements and shifting legal and ethical landscapes. While AI-generated images are here to stay, their future and impact on traditional photography remain uncertain. The industry must navigate these changes and find a balance between technological innovation and preserving the artistry of professional photography.
