"Tom Brady Responds To Baker Mayfield "I Thought Stressful Was Not Having Super Bowl Rings."

Baker Mayfield Clarifies Comments On Tom Brady: 'Taken Out Of Context'

After leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 33-16 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Baker Mayfield addressed the media regarding recent comments he made about Tom Brady, which he says were misunderstood. The Buccaneers quarterback explained that his remarks, which were perceived as a slight toward the seven-time Super Bowl champion, were meant in a lighthearted way and were taken out of context.

The Initial Comments and Their Fallout

Mayfield’s comments came during a conversation on the Casa de Klub podcast with Corey Kluber and Tyler Casagrande, where he discussed the differences in team atmosphere with Brady and himself at the helm. He playfully noted that Brady's intensity often led to a "stressed-out locker room" due to the high standards he demanded.

"The building was a little bit different with Tom in there," Mayfield remarked during the podcast. "Obviously, playing-wise, Tom is different. He had everybody dialed in, high-strung environment, so I think everybody was pretty stressed out. They wanted me to come in, be myself, bring the joy back to football, for guys who weren't having as much fun."

While these comments were likely intended to highlight his own leadership style rather than criticize Brady, they quickly gained media attention. Some interpreted them as suggesting Brady's leadership stifled the team’s enjoyment of the game, especially in contrast to Mayfield's more relaxed approach.

Mayfield’s Response: 'Nothing Personal'

After the game, Mayfield was quick to set the record straight. He expressed that his comments were taken out of context and that there was no ill will behind them.

"I think a lot of that got taken out of context, and none of it was personal by any means," Mayfield clarified. "It's just what he demanded of the guys, and that's the aura of Tom Brady. That's what he did to bring a championship here."

Mayfield emphasized his respect for Brady and shared that the former quarterback was happy for his success. He noted that Brady, who was in Tampa to broadcast Sunday’s game for Fox Sports, spoke with him before the matchup and expressed support for his current role with the Buccaneers.

"It's fun to be able to talk about the same experience with a guy like that," Mayfield said, referring to Brady, who led the Bucs to a Super Bowl victory in 2021.

Tom Brady’s Response: 'No Apologies'

During the broadcast, Brady responded to Mayfield’s podcast comments in typical fashion, with a blend of humor and competitive fire. When his broadcast partner, Kevin Burkhardt, mentioned the “stressed-out locker room” comment, Brady quipped, "I thought stressful was not having Super Bowl rings."

Brady continued, saying, "There was a mindset of a champion that I took to work every day. This wasn't daycare. If I was going to have fun, I'd go to Disneyland with my kids." Brady’s remarks emphasized the seriousness with which he approached the game and the high expectations he placed on himself and his teammates.

He added, "There's a way to approach this game, and it's with the right mindset to try to push each other outside our comfort zone, and great teammates do that. You come, I have someone like [Rob] Gronkowski, I have someone like Evans -- there's high expectations for us. We got to make sure we go out there and deliver."

Brady’s competitive nature remains as fierce as ever, even in retirement, with Burkhardt commenting that Brady’s "competitive juices are still flowing."

A Mutual Respect Between Two Quarterbacks

Mayfield took Brady’s response in stride, laughing when asked about the "daycare" remark after the game. He reiterated that his comments were not meant to undermine Brady’s leadership or accomplishments.

"He did it his own way and that's why he has seven rings," Mayfield said, acknowledging Brady's unparalleled success. "So, not much else needs to be said."

Despite the media buzz, it’s clear that Mayfield holds great respect for Brady, and the two seem to have a mutual understanding of the different leadership styles they brought to the Buccaneers. Brady’s presence at the game also seemed to boost the team’s morale, with wide receiver Mike Evans—who became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer on Sunday—expressing his admiration for the former quarterback.

"It's amazing," Evans said after the game. "I guess he gave us some good luck today. The last time we played the Eagles with him was a playoff game that we won [2021 wild-card round], so I guess it just brought back good memories and everybody felt like that too."

Conclusion

While Baker Mayfield’s comments about Tom Brady were initially misconstrued, the quarterback’s clarification highlighted his respect for the Buccaneers legend. Mayfield’s playful remarks were meant to contrast their differing leadership styles, not to discredit the impact Brady had on the organization. Both quarterbacks recognize that there are many paths to success, and Mayfield seems more than happy to forge his own path in Tampa.
