"Dogma 2" In The Works: Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Poised to Return

The cult classic “Dogma”, Kevin Smith’s bold and irreverent 1999 religious comedy, is officially getting a sequel, and Smith is eyeing its original stars, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, for a triumphant return. During a panel at Vulture Festival on Sunday, the filmmaker delighted fans with the news, offering a glimpse into the ambitious future he envisions for the franchise.

Affleck and Damon Back in Action

Smith expressed confidence that Affleck and Damon would reprise their roles, at least in cameo appearances. Their involvement, according to Smith, is a near certainty given their history together, particularly his uncredited contributions to the duo’s Oscar-winning film “Good Will Hunting”:

"I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 f—ing years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies. Expect a cameo from them – more than a f—ing cameo."

Their participation is vital to the project, with Smith affirming that the sequel would only proceed with their involvement.

Expanding the View Askewniverse

Smith’s plans for “Dogma 2” extend far beyond a single film. In his typically self-aware and humorous style, he addressed potential detractors who fear a sequel might tarnish the original:

“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. You’ll ruin it. And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f—ing tickled. I found a way in.”

The sequel isn’t just a one-off project; it’s the launchpad for what Smith envisions as a larger franchise. This could include further sequels, spin-offs, and even TV adaptations—expanding the View Askewniverse in ways that weren’t possible in the late 1990s.

A Beloved Ensemble Returns

The original “Dogma” boasted a star-studded ensemble cast, including Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, and Smith himself. While many details about the sequel remain under wraps, the filmmaker has hinted that key members of the original cast who are still “viable” could return, adding to the nostalgia and excitement.

The Legacy of Dogma

“Dogma” became a cult favorite for its sharp satire and fearless critique of organized religion, while still maintaining a heartwarming exploration of faith and redemption. The film’s unique tone and ensemble performances set it apart, and fans have long hoped for a follow-up.

Smith’s recent announcement coincides with a resurgence of interest in the original film, which is set to return to theaters and debut on streaming platforms for the first time. This renewed accessibility will undoubtedly introduce a new generation to the quirky and provocative world of “Dogma.”

What’s Next for Dogma 2?

While production timelines and further casting details have yet to be revealed, Smith’s passion for the project and his close ties to Affleck and Damon suggest the sequel is moving full steam ahead. If Smith delivers on his promise to not just revive but expand the Dogma universe, fans could be in for a sprawling and irreverent journey unlike anything seen before.

Final Thoughts

As Kevin Smith gears up to revisit one of his most beloved creations, the excitement is palpable. With Affleck and Damon expected to return, and the potential for an expanded franchise, “Dogma 2” promises to be a nostalgic yet innovative continuation of a cult classic.
